The Top 5 Iron Man Artists

J. Gordon
There have been many amazing artists to draw Iron Man's monthly comic book series over the years. These are the artists whose work has been incredibly influential on the character.

Don Heck
Don Heck drew the majority of Iron Man stories in Tales of Supense. This title was where Iron Man first appeared, and would later share that monthly book with co-star Captain America, though they were in separate stories. Don laid the groundwork for character designs in the series, though the famous transition from gold armor to the red and gold we know today was handled by Steve Ditko. Heck drew the first appearances of Hawkeye, the Black Widow and Iron Man's arch-foe, the Mandarin. Don Heck passed away in 1995.

George Tuska
George Tuska is by far the most prolific Iron Man artist throughout the character's history. George drew most of the first one hundred issues of Iron Man's self-titled comic, creating many of the characters the Golden Avenger still battles today. The artist has been described as an illustrator who could draw anything and draw it fast. In fact, there were months where as many as four books were released featuring his artist credit. He drew the Iron Man title consistently from 1968 to 1978, leaving an undeniable legacy on the character. George Tuska died in 2009.

Bob Layton
Layton's tenure on Iron Man is two-fold. His pencils on the book are dynamic and his character moments convey a wide range of emotion. However, Layton also had a more intimate connection with the character because he also co-wrote the book for a time. Along with co-writer David Michelinie, Layton helped re-envision the character, bringing dimension to Iron Man and his supporting characters that had not been seen before. Though the issues he penciled were not a numerous as some, Layton's name remains synonymous with some of the greatest Iron Man issues ever published.

John Romita, Jr.
The son of legendary Spider-Man artist, John Romita, Romita Jr.'s first memorable run in the Marvel Universe was on Iron Man. It was being written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton at the time, and John drew the book during its most controversial storyline, Demon in a Bottle. Romita Jr. has since gone on to work on almost every character in the Marvel Universe and is still producing high quality work on a monthly basis. He is considered one of the premiere artists of the industry.

Adi Granov
With his technically striking style, Adi Granov has re-envisioned Iron Man's look for the 21st century. He established the character design for the 2008 Iron Man feature film, and illustrated many of the memorable marketing images seen everywhere since the film's release. Granov completed many covers for the comic book series prior to the film, and also illustrated a full storyline written by the popular writer, Warren Ellis. Adi continues to produce incredibly beautiful covers for Marvel Comics.
