There are many wonderful shows to see in London; it almost certainly has the best selection of theatre in the world. Its musical shows are particularly popular and there are some great ones to choose from. Here is a personal selection of the absolute best:

1. Les Misérables at the Queen's Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue is now in its 25th year and is the longest running musical in London. It is a marvellously dramatic and melodic rendering of a novel by Victor Hugo. If you want light-hearted entertainment then choose something else. But if you want a moving and memorable night then this one is the best in town.

2. The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre on Haymarket is Andrew Lloyd Webber's operatic masterpiece. It is now in its 24th year and still plays to packed houses. It is also the longest-running musical on Broadway. The music is marvellous and the stage effects are stunning. A brilliant show.

3. Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre is the best song and dance show. The music is by Sir Elton John but it is the dancing and heart-rending story which are most memorable. Simply a great night out..

4. Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre is set in Prohibition-era Chicago. It tells the story of Roxie Hart and how she murdered her lover. It has some fantastic numbers. There is a dark and decadent tone to the musical that makes it unsuitable for juveniles but the adult in you will probably love it. The show has included many celebrities and stars in its line-up.

5. Jersey Boys at the Prince Edward Theatre is a documentary-style musical based on the story of the group, the Four Seasons. When you watch it you will be amazed at how many great hits they made and how much you still enjoy them. Numbers include Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man,,December 1963 (Oh, What A Night) and My Eyes Adored You.

Other great West End musicals include The Lion King, Grease, Mama Mia, We will Rock You, Wicked, Oliver and Dirty Dancing. This fantastic range and choice means that if you cannot get tickets for your first choice you can still enjoy a great night out at a London musical.
