Janitor
This job is number one on the list, and it doesn't take an ivy league graduate to figure out why. In this job you will be doing what I like to call "scrubbin and bubblin." You will be scrubbing toilets, mopping floors, and wearing an ugly blue or gray jumpsuit. You might have to take this job because it pays pretty well and there is not a great amount of competition for it. After all, not many people would clean something well even if somebody paid them. Janitors can earn up to 32,000 a year.
Full time babysitter or nanny
This job is number two because most people wouldn't babysit their own kids if you paid them to, let alone somebody else's. Yes, this job is for the young college grad whose job search is going down the tubes. The job entails changing diapers, singing songs, and reading aloud. You may even have to cook.
Newspaper deliverer
This is one of the easiest jobs to get. I should know because I have had it before. All you have to do is answer one of those ads in the paper that read "early morning worker needed. No collections involved. You are hired right on the spot, and before you know it, you are getting up at 3 am to pick up the papers from the loading dock and driving around in pitch black while the sun is down looking for addresses you've never even heard of. Get this. You even have to get out of your car because most people want their papers placed in a certain area. They just don't want them tossed on the lawn or at the end of a driveway. You can expect to make a minimum of 150.00/wk
Retail sales associate
Did you go to school for that? Probably not, but you get discounts right? Maybe. That's if they don't make you open up at 22.2 APR store credit card in order to get it. In this job, you will use your concentration skills to make sure you fold men's shirts correctly. Finally, you will use your attention to detail as you help people fill out their credit applications. Macys, Banana Republic, and Lord and Taylor's are all hiring, and you with all your college sophistication, are the perfect type to stand behind a counter for eight hours a day perfecting the phrase, "Will you be putting that on your credit account?" Retail associates make approximately 17.000/yr
Waitress
You took this job because you heard that you can make the same amount in tips working for 5 hours that a person can make at a normal job working for eight or more hours. You also heard that you did not have to wait for a check or payday. The money is deposited right into your pants pocket after each shift. You heard that you get great food at a high discount.
What you did not hear was that you are not that good at waitressing. The first week you started, you spilled two plates of fries, and on a Saturday night, the pressure is just too much for you. You found out that you can't stand cigarette smoke, and everyday it causes you to go home with a headache. You also did not hear that it bothers you that you must hear people complain about steak temperature and other crap when you graduated sigma cum laude. The customers notice your disdain for your low employment choice, even though you think that you are putting up a pretty good front. Then, the worst thing happens. You do not get good tips. Expect to make a minimum of $20/shift
Grocery store cashier
After learning how to recite your university's alma mater, you believed that you would have a bright future ahead of you. Little did you know that you would spend most of your after-college life perfecting the phrase, "Paper or plastic?" Expect to make about minimum wage.
What do you do in order to avoid having one of the top five most humiliating jobs for college grads? I suppose that you could work on your job search. Make that job search succeeed no matter what you have to do. Actually, I cannot really give you any advice yet because I am still in one of the above jobs. Hopefully, soon I will be communicating my success story.

Post a CommentGood article. I must admit, I'd be happy to earn the $32,000 per year that janitors can earn. I earned my BS in accounting this past March, and I have not received one single response to any of the resumes I have submitted to companies that are hiring. :-(
If you replace the janitor with housekeeper, I've had every one of thes jobs:) Great article!
I had a friend who graduated from a top notch university with me who had to end up working at Wal-Mart after graduation because her plans to go to medical school didn't pan out :(
Steam carpet cleaner: Worst Job Ever.
This article is awesome! I will be graduating next year, thanks for the heads up! Good luck with everything as well; YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!
Working in retail can be good, bad or worse. :) You can though make a quite a bit more than 17k year. 30-40k is more accurate for selling appliances.
I've been a grocery cashier, and I didn't have to go to college for it either. I've also been a sales clerk. Today, apart from writing and radio, my work involves the automotive industry and store management. If you had room for a sixth job, you might want to consider Vacuum Cleaner Sales (yes, I've done that too). You meet prospective customers in their home and basically clean their house (or at least part of it) for free. This job is usually commission-only, and it literally really sucks.
