The Top 5 Worst 3D Movies List
Some Good Films Are Just Not Meant for 3D; While Some Bad Films Are Always Bad Regardless of Whether They Are in 2D or 3D
There are actually many animation and live action offers that producers make into 3D movies for the heck (as for them, they put much stakes with high hopes of making their projects such money-spinners).
Not all stories or film style or cinematic treatment are best suited for the 3D medium.
The Top 5 Worst 3D Movies List is a result of both poor quality storytelling and disappointing utilization of 3D technology in films. These movies really prove that every filmmaking endeavor, whether live action or animation, always requires careful decision-making from the thematic to the creative to the technical aspects in order to make a film a real quality one, worth every single penny from the movie audience.
This list is based on the 3D film offers from the mid 2000's to March 2010. I am yet to see 3D movies of yesteryears, so I can't tell anything about the 3D movies from those eras just yet.
1. G-Force
Year: 2009
Director: Hoyt Yeatman
Voice Cast: Bill Nighy, Sam Rockwell, Will Arnett, Jon Favreau, Zach Galifianakis, Nicolas Cage, Kelli Garner, Penelope Cruz, Tyler Patrick Jones, Steve Buscemi and Piper Mackenzie Harris
Plot: A specially trained squad of guinea pigs from a US government program that trains spy animals takes on a mission to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world through the use of household appliances.
Whether as a 2D or 3D flick, this comedy adventure just doesn't work. It fails to come up with any interesting character or an inspired plot. The story is overly formulaic and filled with dull scenes amidst the special effects. Its dedication to egregious stereotypes and fart jokes are so forced. And for a movie specifically marketed as a 3D flick, this one falls totally flat.
2. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience
Year: 2009
Director: Bruce Hendricks
Cast: The Jonas Brothers as themselves (Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas); with guests stars Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift
Plot: Pop singing sensation Jonas Brothers make their film debut with a movie concert feature in 3D format. And this cinema offer provides additional footages of backstage happenings as filmed in their July and August 2008 stints at Anaheim's Honda Center and New York's Madison Square Garden.
With a concert film that is largely flat and unenlightening, the band's pop sensibilities don't really allow for much space for amazement. What really pops out is how it's just a trite cash-in material with canned concert footages and phoney fly-on-the-wall snippets. The conventional staging and typical shots don't offer much treats... perhaps, except for those fans who are merely well content with seeing their favorite celebrity icons in the big screen, in 3D.
3. Clash of the Titans
Year: 2010
Director: Louis Leterrier
Cast: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos, Mads Mikkelsen and Luke Evans
Plot: In the Greek city of Argos, a war between men and the gods is about to begin. The demi-god Perseus, son of the king of the gods Zeus but raised as a fisherman in the land of men, seeks revenge from Zeus' brother Hades, the god of the underworld, who killed the family he has known and loved. Then, he faces his destiny to rescue Argos from the ruthless rage of Hades by leading a band of soldiers in a quest to defeat the Kraken. And in so doing, he can prevent Hades from overthrowing his father and destroying mankind.
As an affectionate remake of the great 1981 original, Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans merely offers a messy collection of visual thrills which don't really get to offset the problems of its poor screenplay. Things just don't add up at all. It's a mediocre remake with little 3D value. The story is weak, the dialogue is bad... it just doesn't work.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Year: Originally released in 1993; re-released for 3D in 2006
Director: Henry Selick
Voice Cast: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, Greg Proops and Paul Reubens
Plot: Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, is bored doing the same thing every year for Halloween. He discovers Christmas Town, but he doesn't understand how it works. He kidnaps Santa Claus and takes the responsibility of delivering alternative gifts to unsuspecting children. And he makes his own version of Christmas based on his Halloween background.
During its release in 1993, this Tim Burton story brought to life by director Henry Selick was a very successful stop-motion animation offer. No doubt about it. However, the decision to re-release it in 3D format merely justified the fact that this film was clearly not made for 3D. It really didn't make sense to put in 3D effects to a masterpiece that just wasn't meant for it.
5. Fly Me to the Moon
Year: 2008
Director: Ben Stassen
Voice Cast: Christopher Lloyd, Kelly Ripa, Nicollette Sheridan, Tim Curry and Robert Patrick Benedict; with a live action/animation cameo by real life Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin
Plot: In 1969, three spirited pre-teen flies from Cape Canaveral dream of traveling to space. And they set off on a courageous mission to become the first insects to fly to the moon by hitching a ride on the historic Apollo 11 space flight (with a setting and dialogue based on the actual transcripts and the original blueprints from NASA).
Flatly animated and indifferently scripted, Fly Me To the Moon doesn't achieve a successful take-off. Its flimsy storytelling, mediocre character design and weak storyline ground the film way before its serious attempt to soar greater heights. And as a 3D animation attempting to make a giant leap, it requires something much more astounding than what it has actually become.
