1. 28 Days Later
This was one of my favorite zombie movies, a post-apocalyptic film set in London. A highly contagious virus called "Rage" is released and quickly spreads through the population turning them into vicious zombies. The film focuses on a small group of people who are not as yet infected and how they cope with the breakdown of society and continue to avoid being attacked by the zombies. Numerous scenes depicting an abandoned, desolate London, contribute to the creepy atmosphere of this movie.
2. Dawn of the Dead (2004 film)
The 2004 film is a remake of George A. Romero's 1978 film. This movie focuses on a small group of people living in a shopping mall surrounded by hordes of zombies. Plenty of gore and zombie attacks make for interesting viewing, including the birth of a zombie baby!
3. Fido
For something different try Fido, a zombie comedy movie. In this film radiation from space is the culprit. The radiation turned the dead into zombies and contaminated the living, so that when they died, they too turned into zombies. A corporation called Zomcon manufactures collars and remote controls which keep the zombies' flesh-eating urges under control so that they can be used as servants. This film focuses on a zombie called Fido and his adventures and relationships with the family that owns him.
4. I Am Legend
I Am Legend combines zombies with elements of vampirism, a winning combination in my opinion! A virus originally made by man to cure cancer is the source of the zombies' origins. The focus of this film is one man, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville, possibly the last man left uninfected in the world. Neville fills his solitary days with attempts to find a cure for the virus, making trips into the deserted city of Manhattan for food and supplies and waiting for a response to his radio broadcasts.
5. Land of the Dead
Zombie numbers greatly outweigh the human population in Land of the Dead. The majority of the humans now live in the city of Pittsburgh, bordered by a large river and an electric barricade. At the center of the city is the Fiddlers Green where the rich live whilst the rest of the city's population lives in poverty. The zombies begin to learn and adapt to their environment and start to communicate with each other. With their newly developed skills they start an attack on the city and the remaining humans.
These movies can be purchased at Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart as well as many other retailers.
