The Top 50 Hip-Hop Songs of All-Time

Catherine Betzabe
Do you remember back in the day when people wore shell-toe Adidas or suede Pumas? How about when everyone wore Adidas sweat-suits and hollow rope gold chains almost an inch thick? Do you remember the time when people walked around with a boombox on their shoulder and your parents kept asking you what is break-dancing and why there is cardboard all over the place? Those were the days were it all began. The days there were artists such as, the Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Eric B. & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Special Ed, NWA, and Salt-N-Pepa layed the building blocks for a new culture. It was back in the days before it all transformed to this mutli-billion dollar a year industry we call Hip-Hop. It was called Rap back the, the days when no one every expected it all to last. The days that the critics didn't care because they thought it would just be a fad. Little did they know, it would continue to grow, and that it would influence all most ever aspect of our lives. It has all transformed to a point were it is completely taking over and the critics can't say or do anything about it. What can you say when there are artists, such as Jay-z and Alicia Keys performing at the Yankees World Series celebration, or when Jay-Z aired right before the start of the Super Bowl? Critics these day's, really don't have a choice in the matter, and we owe it to the artists that started it all. Don't get me wrong, artists now a days definitely play their role in the growth and the commercialization of Hip-Hop, but they all wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all the sweat and hard work put in by all the old school artists. That's why I dedicate this Top 50 list to all of them.
