Qualcomm mirasol technology,
Yes, I know this isn't a reader but it is the color display future readers will likely be using. This new technology is more power conservative then traditional E-ink displays, and best of all it is color. Qualcomm is not a manufacture of E-readers, and has no intention of breaking into the market with this new technology. Instead, they suggest that other manufacturers should be using their technology near the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011. This is certainly something to look forward to. You can watch a video of this new technology being displayed here.
Liquivista,
Qualcomm has a competitor in the market for a color display solution. Liquivista intends to have a 2010/2011 release as well for their color E-reader screen technology. Though it hasn't been released yet they already have the design set for their new color E-reader the pebble you can view it here.
OLCD, The Asus DR-750.
The Asus DR-750 yet another soon to be released technology this new E-reader uses OLCD technology to out perform the current kindle E-readers in refresh rate and adds color. Asus new E-reader is suppose to have a battery life of up to 144 hours, and is set to release some time in 2010. You will just have to watch out for this one. You can read more about Asus new E-reader here.
Delta, releasing 13" E-reader.
More new E-reader technology on the horizon. Delta set to release their version of the E-reader based on Bridgestone's E-paper technology. This new E-reader boasts a 13" screen and is set to release in December of 2010. This new reader seems to have a lot of speculation going on about it, and not a lot of footage. I wouldn't get to excited just yet although it does look really cool.
Apples iPad,
This is not really an E-reader and as such it has many more features then most E-readers however it also has the capability to read E-books and as such shall be included just remember this device will have a considerably shorter time between charges. The iPad has a battery expectancy of 6 to 10 hours which is considerably better then I would have expected and features a robust application base. You can IM write E-mail and much more all on the go with the IPad but with a price tag of $500 why not get 2 netbooks?
iPod touch,
Getting a little further away from being a mini mac the iPod touch fits in the pal of your hand reasonably well but this has the same issue as the iPad with a short battery life estimates show that the iPod in use for web browsing reading and anything else that loads down the screen will bring its battery life down to 3 to 9 hours. This testing shows that the iPad would be a considerably better option then the iPod for video web searches and reading books but still not as good as a traditional E-reader.
Digital Novel,
If you absolutely must have a color E-reader right now. Pan Digital has released a color display E-reader called the "Digital Novel" This new E-reader has a 7" full color display, but is a bit of a trade off. This display cost it some battery time. The "Digital Novels" battery life is only about six hours, but it has a sharp vibrant color picture and features Wifi connectivity. Something to consider priced at $199 if your in need of an E-reader then this is a conservative iPad made just for you.
JE200 color,
Another currently available color E-reader has been released by Jointech the JE200 color features a 7" touch screen, a 400 mhz processor, Wifi, and 16 gigs of storage just to name a few of its features. However, once again in order to attain this technology they pushed to a LCD display and in so doing they decreased battery life to approximately 6 hours. While this is an interesting piece of hardware, it's no more useful then a net book and costs about the same in today's market.
Eken M003,
This E-reader is one powerful piece of hardware; the only place selling it is Chinagrabber.com. This appears to be another Chinese knock off. However, it is completely functional, and with so few E-readers available in color, it is to be considered amongst the list. This E-reader has an 8" TFT touch screen, Wifi support, a 600 mhz processor 128 megs of ram and comes with either 2 or 4 gigs internal storage with SD card expansion available to bring it up to 32 gigs of storage.
Fujitsu's Flepia,
This E-reader supports color and a multitude of other options and is even available today if you can speak Japanese. This E-reader has an 8" screen, 260,000 colors, blue tooth, Wifi, and a mini USB port. All the features one could hope for it's just really sad it's only been released in japan its release price is ¥99,750, or just over $1000.
Entourage Edge,
This tablet-pc has dual screens in a flip open fashion similar to a books pages has dual 9.7" screens and has a battery which can last up to 16 hours. Weighing in at only 3 lbs it has Wifi access built in. A robust feature set allowing the search of text found in books on the Internet, and more. With a price tag of $500, this isn't a cheap piece of gadgetry, but it is a rather intuitive user interface for browsing the web chatting reading books and more.
Conlusion,
As you can see there is a lot going for E-color readers right now. Unfortunately, if you really want one, you will have to deal with low battery life or black and white E-ink technology. There are many up and coming technologies, and if you have enough patience. I assure you these new technologies are going to be great, and take this market to a whole new level. The best E-readers will be able to last for days without a charge as you would expect of a book, who wants to recharge their book? LCD technology simply requires too much power. I will be eagerly awaiting the new releases right along with you. If you would like to read more on this subject and others like it drop by my Blog. Or add me on Facebook.
