When we think of runners, Greyhounds always come to mind. Sleek and slender, they are known as the world's fastest dog. Bred initially to hunt, they are now often used to race. Some have even been clocked at 45 mph! Adopt a retired racer to provide it with a more laid back, loving lifestyle.These dogs are great because, even though they can be a bundle of energy, they have a very calm personality. They are content to lay at your feet and rest at the end of a long day.
Dalmations were initially bred to run beside horse-drawn coaches. Today, they are still great runners and very energetic dogs. Recognizable for their white color with contrasting black spots, they need a high level of daily exercise.
German Short-haired Pointers are bird hunters. They are very fast dogs, with great stamina for running. Like dalmations, they also demand a lot of attention and exercise.
Siberian Huskies are well known as sled dogs. Bred to pull heavy loads over deep snow in the Arctic, they have a high level of energy and can run long distances. They have a very athletic and muscular build and are eager to perform any type of exercise.
Border Collies are a smaller breed of dog. Bred to herd sheep, they are very quick, agile dogs. They love to work, so are excellent on a farm. They have high levels of energy, so need daily vigorous exercise.
Weimaraners were originally bred for bird hunting. They have a very streamlined, muscular body, and have high levels of endurance and energy. Because of this, they are very high maintenance dogs, demanding a lot of attention and exercise. Without this, they are likely to become bored and may be destructive.
Vizlas are beautiful, red haired dogs. Bred to hunt birds, they are very fast and agile. They have a high level of endurance, so can easily keep up with an owner who loves to run.
Labrador Retrievers, bred to hunt birds on both land and water, are great runners and swimmers. They are also very docile dogs, so are great for families with children.
English Springer Spaniels are a long-legged breed of Spaniel. Because of this, they are very fast runners. They have high levels of energy and are very playful dogs.
Whippets are a medium-sized dog that are physically similar to Greyhounds. Very active and quick, they are many times used for racing. They have a very gentle and calm personality, and are just as happy indoors resting as they are exercising.

Greyhounds are beautiful but unfortunately have no endurance. By "nature", or should I say breading, they are built for speed and make poor running mates if you plan to take a jog longer than a mile. Former Greyhound owner.
