The Top Five Tag Teams in Pro Wrestling History

The "Road Warriors" Were the Best Tag Team Ever!

Randy Inman
This article is about the top five tag teams in pro wrestling history. Yes I know wrestling is fake or sports entertainment or whatever. But I also know that pro wrestling articles draw lots of attention from readers on the internet. I must confess that I have not watched pro wrestling on a steady basis in about three years.

I do consider myself a pro wrestling historian especially in the Mid Atlantic Championship area and NWA in general. My criteria on ranking the top five tag teams in pro wrestling history follows. Popularity or hatred from the fans, success in the way of titles won, longevity and whether they were big time tag teams in multiple areas, all come into play. Feel free to check the sources at the end of my article about the top five pro wrestling tag teams ever, in it will be links to some of my other pro wrestling articles, in addition to sources used.

No 5 The "Wild Samoans"

The "Wild Samoans" were just bad asses and scared the crap out of some fans in the days before wrestling was outed to be sports entertainment. The "Wild Samoans "come from the same wrestling family as "The Rock" and Peter Maivia among others. Their feuds with the "faces" of the then WWF were classic and they won their share of tag team championships.

No 4 Fabulous Freebirds

The "Freebirds" were one of the first groups to use interchangeable tag team partners. The original Freebirds were Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy. Jimmy Garvin replaced Roberts but for most of their tenure the "Freebirds "included Roberts.

The "Freebirds" rank fourth on my list of the top five tag teams in pro wrestling history. The "Freebirds" vs. Von Erich's feud may have been the best in Texas's long wrestling history. The Freebirds won titles and the hatred of fans all over the world in their time.

No 3 The Hart Foundation

Like the "Freebirds" the "Hart Foundation" can be referring to several members of one group. Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart and Jimmy Hart were the original members of the "Hart Foundation" later to include The "British Bulldog", Owen Hart and Brian Pillman at various times. The "Hart Foundation" won enough big matches to make my top five tag teams in wrestling history list.

No 2 "The Rock and Roll Express"

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson formed one of the most dynamic tag teams in wrestling history when they started the "Rock and Roll Express." They had the music and the looks and enough wrestling ability to win over the fans. I must admit to heckling them in a Newton North Carolina Armoury a few years ago. It was after there heyday and I was yelling "Rock and Roll is dead" and "Get a haircut" to the amusement of the fans in my section. But I did like the "Rock and Roll Express" and they rank as the 2nd best tag team ever in my opinion.

No 1 "The Road Warriors"

Sometimes they were "The Road Warriors" and other times they were "The Legion of Doom" but no matter what Hawk and Animal were the best tag team in pro wrestling history. They either are the only or one of the very few tag teams to hold world titles in the AWA, NWA and WWF areas. The Road Warriors won belts wherever they went and have perhaps the biggest fan following of any tag team ever.

YES! I remember most of these. I enjoyed the older wrestling tag teams, but can't stand the new stuff. Do you remember Jimmy Superfly Snuka?? That was a long time ago, but he was great backt hen!

Hawk and Animal were great, there was also Gino and Chirs, The Rockn Roll Express, the Fantastics and Ted Diabase and Dr. Death used to team and sometimes Jake the Snake would jump in. These were the good days of wrestling.

Great article, Randy. Gotta love the Wild Samoans, to me the epitome of scary humans. (They were human, weren't they?)
