The Top Five Unsung Heroes of Sports

Mike
All sports fans have players they love for absolutely no reason. They aren't especially talented and aren't the prettiest players but they have an undeniable charm to them. These players are the unsung heroes of a team. They do their job every night with little recognition. This list will give those players the credit they deserve.

Here they are....

1. Kurt Rambis: Let me tell you something about Kurt Rambis. He "ain't no joke". According to my friend R.W., the Rambinator was kick ass. He is the influence behind the popular "Mongoose" character who heckles Kobe Bryant during television commercials. With big goggles and a wicked 'stache, Rambis resembled that old guy who comes to your pick up game who is way too serious about his game. Best remembered for being clotheslined by Kevin McHale in the playoffs, everyone loves the Rambinator's hustle and heart.

2. Jiri Slegr: My love of Jiri Slegr comes from playing NHL 2005 for the Xbox. Paul and I would play as the Columbus Blue Jackets. We would create ourselves and a bunch of other crazy characters. The team lacked something though. It lacked an enforcer. We looked around the league until we found Jiri Slegr. He was by no means the most talented player but he had character. Getting him a goal was more important than any win. We loved Jiri Slegr for his heart and sheer lack of skill.

3. Bernie Federko: I loved collecting cards when I was younger. The neighborhood kids and I focused on hockey cards. We loved the Red Wings and played hours of street hockey everyday. There was one coveted card in all of Wexy. The Bernie Federko Red Wings card. None of us really knew anything about Federko except he had a funny name and a sweet 'stache. It started off as a joke. My neighbor Josh tried to play off this Federko card as the most valuable card on the block. We ended up playing along and by the end everyone wanted that card. I later find out Federko was on of the most underrated players in NHL history and still holds many records at Michigan. None of us would have cared about this though. We just admired his well groomed facial hair.

4. Mark Madsen: Mad Dog Madsen is quite a dancer. Yeah right! He is absolutely terrible. You might remember him as the goofy white dude who made a fool of himself dancing when the Laker's one their championships back in 2000 and 2001. This is all most people know about Madsen and that is just fine. He is that goofy dancing guy. The only other thing you need to know is he is a great teammate and the ultimate hustle player. Madsen must have modeled his game after Rambis.

5. Cheese Danish: Paul and I played a lot of video games. During our junior years we decided we needed a baseball team. Once again, crazy off-the-wall players were created. The big one this time was a player named Cheese Danish. Yes, I know he isn't an unsung sports hero because he isn't real. But our MLB baseball game would not have been complete without him. He had a great bat and an even better name. I bet there is a lot of video game players with a Cheese Danish-esque player on their team

What you got....
I just gave you mine. So what are your favorite unsung sports heroes. Let me know who I missed.

Great article topic! Kurt Rambis back in the day is a great example of the perfect role player. As a Celtics fan all my life, I remember those great Laker teams. How about Horace Grant as another unsung hero?

Yeah definately the hustle and heart-you knew he was out there giving it all he had despite not being especially talented-but he was GOOD!

man I forgot all about Rambis! Used to love that guy for the very reason you said in your intro statement-absolutely no particlular reason. Well maybe-that he just seemed to be you wanted to pull for.
