Chain hotels are a dime a dozen, but if you want to have a different kind of experience, try staying in a historic hotel the next time you visit Plattsburgh, New York.

The Hotel Saranac in Plattsburgh dates back to 1819 and has boasted some big names over the years. Albert Einstein, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and Calvin Coolidge are only a few of the famous people to stay at this hotel throughout its history. This building was even once home to a tuberculosis hospital in the 1850s. It doesn't get more historic than that! It officially opened as a hotel in 1927 and is now one of the greatest pieces of architecture in the area.

The Green Mountain Inn is located in Stowe, Vermont but it's well worth the drive. Two of the buildings located on the property are on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was once a private home and had several different owners over the years. Built in 1983, the house was later turned into a public hotel. At least two presidents have stayed there over the years: Chester A. Arthur and Gerald Ford. This hotel is the most luxurious around and not for the budget traveler.

Basin Harbor Club in Lake Champlain, Vermont is just a stones throw from Plattsburgh, New York. The hotel is home to 74 different cottages and a variety of guesthouses. This is your perfect chance to get away from it all and have a few days to commune with nature. Guesthouses have one to three bedrooms and private baths. It's like being away from home, but with all the amenities of home.

The Sunnyside Bed and Breakfast is located right on Lake Champlain. This old fashioned style house is perfect for a nice romantic vacation or a quick getaway all by your lonesome. You can get a room with a private bathroom or pick one of their less expensive rooms where you share a bathroom with other guests. At night you can kick back on the huge porch and just enjoy the scenery.

The Marshall House Bed and Breakfast is a fairly cute little inn located in the Plattsburgh area of New York. Here you'll stay in small rooms located inside a Queen Anne style house. This 1897 house is on the National Register of Historic Places and is incredibly inviting. You'll find that at night you can easily relax on the porch with a cold drink before retiring to your room. You'll also love how inviting the owners are and just how happy they make you feel.

Why stay in a chain hotel when you can stay in a gorgeous historic one instead? These hotels are perfect for your next vacation away from home.
