The Top Reasons to Get Regular Checkups

Why You Need Regular Checkups

For people who have lived in the United States in recent years the term "see your doctor" has become a common mantra of the health care system. Even with this, many people put the doctor appointment at the bottom of their list of things to get done. Often this is because since they feel fine, there is no reason to take up time at the doctors office. But would a visit to the doctor be a small added expense now or a more costly and stressful expense later? Here's the top reasons to get a regular checkup instead of waiting.

The first reason is that regular checkups don't have to be monthly visits to the doctor just to say hello. In fact regular checkups can be once every three or four months if there is no other medical reason than to make sure your body is still at top shape. Many studies have shown that people who have regular checkups throughout the year tend to lead healthier lives and are more aware of their overall physical conditions. While you're at it, you can keep up to date on vaccinations and needed tests for your respective age or gender. This way you never miss a flu shot again!

Health History

While its no doubt that regular checkups tend to build better relationships between the doctor and patient; it also is a way to build up an established health history which your doctor can reference when possible abnormalities appear. Regular checkups also make a more accurate case history and an overview should you find yourself in an Emergency room.

Scheduled Reviews and Examinations

Another reason to get into the habit of regular checkups is preventative care. Instead of having to worry when something goes wrong, using regular checkups as a prevention can help eliminate the worry. Such tests as immunizations, cancer screenings, blood pressure testing, medication reviews, blood pressure and cholesterol levels can be much more effective and efficient if handled during a regular checkup. You can also monitor periodic measurements of weight, hearing and eyesight to catch the onset of any issues or concerns.

Comprehensive Care

It has been proven a few times that people who visit their doctors on a regular basis, and follow the doctors advice, can receive a more comprehensive level of care and more appropriate services than someone who only shows up when there is a health problem. The reason for this? Seeing the doctor when you have a specific complaint will cause both of you to focus only on that one issue. If there are other problems, or an underlying problem, this will be missed. Regular checkups involve creating a patient profile which includes family history, living habits, ongoing or recurring problems and a track record of what treatments worked and what has yet to be tried.

Those are just some of the reasons to schedule regular checkups with your doctor. There are most likely more, but we don't have time for them here. If you're worried about the cost of going to the doctor three or four times per year, consider that most insurance providers in the United States now cover the cost; and it is also part of the Canadian national health coverage. Also consider the cost of Emergency room visits, specialists, and lost time and wages compared to the extra hour a regular checkup would take out of your few months.
