The Top Six Greyhounds Racing at Corpus Christi Greyhound Track in Texas

Carl Kolchak
Corpus Christi Greyhound Track, located in the "Sparkling City by the Sea" on the Texas Gulf Coast, runs six live racing performances each week. Corpus Christi Greyhound Track boasts some fine racers, with the majority of them competing over the 550 yard 5/16ths of a mile course, but some running longer over the 660 yard 3/8ths. The eighth largest city in Texas, Corpus Christi is one of three venues for greyhound racing in the state, the others being Valley Greyhound Park, down by the Mexican border, and Gulf Greyhound Park, a few miles from the outskirts of Houston. In this article, we will take a look at the six best greyhounds currently vying for supremacy at the Corpus Christi Greyhound Track.

TNJ Whirlpool broke in at Corpus Christi in mid-February and right away exhibited a penchant for closing like the wind late in races. The red male out of Dodgem By Design and FMC Lotsofheart rapidly ascended the Corpus Christi grading ladder by using this late foot. Although he is already in the top AA grade at Corpus Christi, Whirlpool has never gotten closer than fourth to the first turn in any of his fourteen races. The July 2005 pup has failed to run third or better just once, and that was a fourth place effort in his first AA contest. Whirlpool prefers to run along the rail at Corpus Christi, and if there is room late, he will zip on by his competitors as he did on May 3rd , when he made it to the stretch in second place and won going away in 30.38 seconds. TNJ Whirlpool will undoubtedly be tried over the longer distance at Corpus Christi Greyhound Track soon.

One of the greyhounds Whirlpool would have to contend with over the Corpus Christi route would be Rooftop Hal, a November 2004 product of the breeding of Rooftop Moby and KL's Tilly. This 73 pound red male has been the top distance star at Corpus Christi since last November when he ran his first 660 yard race there. Hal has since won eight AA 3/8ths, with numerous other times in the money, making good use of his ability to come from behind, occasionally rushing up to the lead like he did on March 3rd of this year in a fourteen length romp.

NXS Hells Belle gained valuable experience every race she ran while moving up at Corpus Christi, with the result being that the 63 pound brindle bitch out of Teamster and Jammin Pearl may now very well be the best sprinter on the grounds. Hells Belle was in AA by her tenth race and in her eighteen total outings she has scored nine wins and five seconds. Hells Belle always comes late, much like TNJ Whirlpool. On May 5th she made the turn in second place and proceeded to win by five lengths in the scorching time of 30.25. Hells Belle won't turn two until the end of May, so she has a wonderful career ahead of her at the Texas oval.

While the first three dogs discussed all broke in at Corpus Christi, CL Happy Jazz did not. This white and red female out of WW Greys Drifter and Faith of Ruckus began running last summer at Wheeling Downs in West Virginia before moving to Valley Greyhound Park in the autumn. She just recently shipped in from there to Corpus Christi, where she has been undefeated in five tries, going right from D to AA without a blemish.
The 58 pound Happy Jazz has made quick work of her foes so far, and seems to have found a home at Corpus Christi.

Gable Excavator's fans would argue that he is king of the hill at Corpus Christi, and they have some startling numbers to back them up. Excavator has won his last five AA outings and he consistently runs the fastest times over the 1,650 foot distance there. Excavator has buried his competition lately, with clockings of 30.22, 30.23, and 30.26 to his credit. He usually rushes to the front and is gone, but can also come from off the pace, as he did in his last time to post on May 17th. The 74 pound red brindle male out of Gable Dodge and Blazing Crystal is two and a half years old, with many more races to come at Corpus Christi.

No mention of the best greyhounds competing at Corpus Christi Greyhound Track would be complete without referring to the old girl herself, Gable Allemands. This August 2002 campaigner is still going strong after a career that has seen her go to post 158 times combined at Wheeling Downs, Gulf, and Corpus Christi, where she has thirty-four triumphs in ninety-two lifetime starts, the vast majority of these being AA events. The big 70 pound red female out of Gable Dodge and Seegold Panache once ran a 30.06 at Corpus, and though retirement may be in the cards for her in the near future, it would be hard to convince the greyhounds she has run against lately that she is almost done, as evidenced by the three top grade victories she posted in a row during late April, each by an average of seven lengths!
