-Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton
An all time classic. And with that said, I absolutely hate this song. I can't deny its impact or its right to exist on a list like this, but I don't have to endorse it, and I'll tell you why. 'Wonderful Tonight' was the favorite song of a girl who I absolutely hated when I was in high school. It doesn't matter who it way and it doesn't matter that I am now 25, and this crap shouldn't bother. Maybe it's petty, but it does, it does still bother me. Even if thousands of high school students are slow dancing and/or making out to this song right at this very moment, it doesn't mean I have to hear it (EVER, ever again).
-The End of the Road by Boyz II Men
To me, this one is the anti-Wonderful Tonight. However, every time I hear Boyz II Men I have a hard time concentrating on the songs. I can't help thinking about what happened to these guys. I mean, seriously, what happened to these guys? In the 90's, nobody beat Boyz II Men when it came to pumping out the sweet ass slow jams, but then they just disappeared. I think they were murdered. Really, someone should look into this.
-Lady in Red by Chris DeBurgh
No one in his or her right mind knows who sings "Lady in Red" (even I, in fact, had to look it up for this article). But it is a top slow song nonetheless. I always dreamt that my date would be wearing a red dress when this song came on so I could silently nod to myself and say, "Yeah, red dress, awesome." Wow, I was a dork.
-I Swear by All 4 One
All 4 One was never as big as Boyz II Men, but for a few high school dances there, they were pretty big. This was by far their signature tune. I can still remember watching the video and thinking, "You know what, this song isn't half bad." This memory makes me think two things: One, did I ever really appreciate punk rock as much as I think I did? And two, it's completely amazing that I didn't turn out gay.
-In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
Of all the songs on this list, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel is the best from an overall composition standpoint. In fact, this song might be in the top 50 of all time, high school dance, pop, rock or otherwise. It's a great one.
-All My Life by K-Ci & JoJo
This is my underdog/wildcard selection. This song was huge and, like All 4 One's "I Swear", my enjoyment of it had me temporarily questioning my sexuality. On (sort of) a side note, isn't it funny how the music you listen to in high school totally pigeonholes you. In and after college, you can listen to whatever you want. Like for instance, if I wanted to state publicly that I thought Justin Timberlake's new record was good, that's fine (you can do that and feel no repercussions for it). But in high school it doesn't work that way. Unless you want to risk public ridicule you adhere to the strict guideline of acceptable music that your clique has dictated. It's a shame really.
-My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
I hate Celine Dion. But you really can't make a list like this without including at least one of her songs (even if all the kids at the dance totally loathe it).
