Americas South is known for its oppressive summer heat. During the summer months temperatures in the southern states can, and often do rise into the triple digits. They are also known for their hot and spicy, mouthwateringly delicious cuisine, numerous festivals and the once a year Mardi Gras celebration that takes place in New Orleans. Fresh, delicious foods are also very popular in the South. I suppose that's why there are so many farms and markets in this area where you can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables grown without the aids of insecticides or fertilizers. But not only do these farms and markets supply the residents of these areas with all natural foods, there also a great source of entertainment and are often farms that have been worked by the same family throughout the generations. This provides a great source of history to those who live in the area as well as visitors who come from all over to take advantage of the different cultural activities to be found in the south.

At Check Virden's Farm located in Jackson, Mississippi, you are allowed to pick your own blueberries and blackberries, these are $6.00 for 5 quarts. You just have to catch them when they are in season. During the months of august and September you can pick your own muscadines for the same price as the blueberries. This provides a wonderful opportunity for those seeking a family activity as well as the school groups who often visit the farm to take advantage of the 'pick your own' adventure. The illusive white fig is even available for purchase at certain times during the year. Although you can't pick your own, you can have a basketful pre - picked for you to take home to enjoy. Red Stick Farmers Market in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is an open air market that is full of local patrons and out of town visitors, every Saturday morning. They have fresh eggs, vegetables, fruits and even some fresh meats that are offered occasionally. Nearby is the Main Street Market, which is much larger and holds significantly more freshly grown merchandise. A big advantage that this market has is that it is located under the cover of the Main Street Garage, which offers some relief from the oppressive heat during the summer. Every month there is a Downtown Arts Market that features art by some of the local people in the area. The French Market District in New Orleans, is a combination of restaurants, flea markets and different shops. This has been called 'Americas oldest city market' and has been located on the same site since 1791. It is a major destination for visitors and tourists of this area. This is not just a tourist spot but also a major shopping location for people who live in this area. The market features various activities that are geared towards children, as well as live music and guest chef appearances at some of the local restaurants in the area. This is an outdoor market that is open year round, 7 days a week.

Ocean Springs Fresh Market in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is a year round Saturday morning tradition. The vendors sell produce which is homegrown and homemade. They also feature beautiful fresh flowers, local honey, and Italian cookies that are made from a secret family recipe. The live music in this area adds to the festive atmosphere. Naples Farmers Market in Naples, Florida, is open every Saturday morning, even during the winter months. They offer fresh citrus and fresh squeezed juices, and unusual fruits like pineapple, eggfruits and bromeliads. This outdoor farmers market is located just three blocks from the beach. And is very popular among the tourists and visitors who flock to Naples, Florida.
