The Top Sports Teams of 2009

The top sports teams of 2009 were the Florida Gators in college football, the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL, the North Carolina Tar heels in men's college hoops, the Connecticut Huskies in the woman's college hoops, the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice, the Los angeles Lakers in the NBA, the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, and the New York Yankees ruled the baseball diamonds.

College Football

In the 2008/2009 the Florida Gators went 13-1. The Gators won the SEC Championship Game over Alabama 31-20. Then the Florida Gators went on to win the National Championship with a 24-14 win over the Oklahoma Sooners. The Gators loss their chance to repeat as the 2010 College Football Team of the Year when they loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game 32-13. The 2010 Team of the Year will either be the Texas Longhorns or the Alabama Crimson Tide.

NFL Football

The Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII 27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals. The February 1^st victory made the Steelers the NFL Football team of the year for 2009. The Steelers 6-7 record so far is going to make it tough for the Steelers to be the 2010 NFL Team of the Year.

Men's NCAA Basketball

The North Carolina Tar Heels went 34-4 and won the NCAA Championship 89-72 over Michigan State. The Tar Heels won every game they play in a tournament by double digits. They were clearly the team of the year in college basketball and should make it back to the tournament in March.

Woman's College Basketball

The Connecticut Huskies won the NCAA Woman's National Championship with a 76-54 win over the Louisville Cardinals. The Huskies march through the tournament may have been more impressive than the North Carolina Men's Team. The Huskies crushed Vermont, Florida, California, Arizona State, Stanford and Louisville in the Tournament. The Connecticut Huskies were clearly the Team of the Year in Woman's NCAA Basketball.

NHL

In hockey it was the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup beating the Detroit Red Wings four games to three. Having won of the super stars of the game in Sidney Crosby also helps. Winning the cup makes the Pittsburgh Penguins the Team of the Year in Hockey.

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic in five games to win the NBA Championship. The convincing series win clearly make the Los Angeles Lakers the team of the year in the NBA for 2009.

WNBA

In the WNBA the Phoenix Mercury won the championship in five games over the Indianapolis Fever. Winning the WNBA Championship 3 games to 2 makes the Phoenix Mercury the WNBA team of the year for 2009.

MLB

The New York Yankees won the World Series defeating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies four games to two. I wrote in October "the New York Yankees are not only the best baseball team money can buy, the Yankees are the best team in baseball period" and they proved it on the baseball field. The New York Yankees are the team of the year in 2009 in Major League Baseball.
