The Top Ten Coolest Comic Book Villains Ever

Examinng the Best Comic Book Bad Guys

Jason Willis
Every good superhero needs a good villain. The following is a list of the baddest of the bad. Presenting the top ten comic book villains of all time!

10: Doomsday
Although he was later revealed to be a being from Krypton (just like Superman), the initial introduction of this character was nothing short of brilliant. Shown on panel as locked away. the creature known as Doomsday eventually broke free from his prison and cut a path of destruction throughout the DC Universe. The Justice League tried to stop him and failed. One last hope emerged: Superman! Superman finally stopped the monster, but not without the cost of his own life.

9: Bane
Raised in a South American prison, Bane eventually escaped and came to Gotham City with one goal in mind: take the city away from Batman! To achieve this goal, Bane freed the inmates of Arkham Asylum, forcing Batman to fight nearly every adversary he'd ever locked away. Exhausted from battle, Bane confronts Barman in Wayne Manor and instead of killing him he breaks his back! This led Jean Paul Valley better known as Azreal to take the mantle of the Bat and confront Bane. Bane is defeated as Azreal discovers Bane's weakness, a dependancy on Venom, a drug that gives Bane superhuman strength.

8: Doctor Octopus
Once a brilliant scientist. Dr. Otto Octavius is driven mad after an experiment gone wrong fuses the mechanical arms he was using in the experiment to his body. Spider-Man tries to stop the good Doctor and is trounced, soundly! Only with the words given in a speech by the Human Torch at his high school can inspire Spidey to don the webs again and confront Doc Ock. Ock is eventually defeated but would go on to become one of the toughest and most persistent Spider-Man villains ever.

7. Sinestro
Once considered the greatest of Green Lanterns, Sinestro becomes obsessed with defeating the outside alien forces attacking his home planet of Korugar and decides the best way to do this is rule the planet himself and become dictator. Sinestro's oppression of his people is eventually discovered and he is banished from the Green Lantern Corps with the aid of the man he trained: Hal Jordan!

6. Carnage
When Venom's alien costume reproduces, the "baby" is left in a prison cell with serial murderer Cletus Kasady and the results are horrific! He becomes Carnage. a being possessed with unique alien abilities! Heg oes on a murderous rampage, killing randomly and recruits other supervillains along the way. It takes nearly the entire Marvel Universe to stop Kasady's rampage known as "Maximum Carnage".

5. Venom
Eddie Brock was once a newspaper journalist whose expose on a villain known as the Sin Eater was eventually proven false. Brock is humiliated and fired as a result. Blaming Spider-Man (who along with Daredevil captured the true Sin Eater), Brock contemplates suicide as seeks refuge inside of a church. As fate would have it, it is the same church where the alien symbiote that was once Spider-Man's costume resides. Rejected and weak from being separated from its host, the costume senses Brock's mutual hatred for Spider-Man and bonds with him creating the being known as Venom.

4. Galactus
Requiring the energy of life-sustaining planets just to stay alive, the hunger of the world eater known as Galactus has put him in conflict with the heroes of Earth many times. Possessing near god-like powers, Galactus has only been defeated using wits and intellect rather than pure brawn.

3. The Green Goblin
While experimenting with a formula left behind by former employee Mendel Stromm, said experiment blows up in the face of industrialist Norman Osborn and changes him forever. Giving him superhuman strength but driving him insane, Osborn adopts the supervillain identity of the Green Goblin. Using weapons created by his own company, Osborn becomes obsessed with taking over the criminal underworld by defeating Spider-Man. Eventually Osborn discovers Spider-Man's secret identity which ultimately leads to the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's first true love. Long thought dead after impailing himself on his own Goblin Glider, Osborn returned from exile in Europe and threatens the life of Spider-Man and his loved ones once again.

2. Doctor Doom
A brilliant scientist, Victor Von Doom was once a classmate of the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards. He would later become embittered by his jealousy of Richards and by facial scars received from an experiment gone wrong. Doom impatiently dons an iron mask created for him by monks which he refuses to let properly cool, ruining his face forever. Doom is obsessed with power, ruling his homeland with an iron fist. His thirst for cosmic power has put him into conflict with powerful beings such as the Silver Surfer, Galactus and The Beyonder.

1. The Joker
A man shrouded in mystery, the villain known only as the Joker has been Batman's greatest adversary. An unrepentant killer, the Joker kills presumably only for his own amusement and the sake of art. His face twisted into a ghoulish grin and his skin rendered ghostly white after being dropped into a vat of chemicals, the Joker becomes obsessed with Batman and sets out the foil him at every turn. The Joker is responsible for many tragedies in Batman's life including shooting Barbara Gordon paralyzing her and ending her career as Batgirl. He also has killed Comissioner Jiim Gordon's second wife and killed the second Robin, Jason Todd, in an explosion. Batman has contemplated killing the Joker on several occasions thinking it may be the only way to stop the Joker's murderous rampages.

The Joker? Really? Galactus could eat him. Doom could zap him into oblivion. The only reason the Joker even ranks is because the guy fighting him couldn't really hold his own in a real superhero fight. Insanity isn't even a real argument, Carnage has him beat in that racket anyway.

The Joker? Wow didn't see that one coming. Cliche. Magneto is given an island by the world so he stops kickin' it's ass.

joker is definitely number one.. but dr doom?

my number two would be venom

  • Conor6/14/2008

    Ever heard of Magneto?

  • Camdog3/10/2008

Doctor doom has to be my top when it comes down to the best of the worst. Man this guy scared me as a kid and still as a adult, even though he is fighting the Fantastic Four. There is no love, the plan is simple "pure evil, kill everyone." I have to agree with J-dunk, where is Magneto and Lex? Remember this guy possesses no powers at all just wit and ingenuity against the Man of Steel and Batman... come on!

  • J-Dunk11/1/2007

Doctor Doom and Joker definitely on top. Green Goblin though? Oo he killed spider-man's girlfriend. I'm going to terrorize your family, but i kill myself? Don't think so. What about Lex Luthor? And venom isn't technically a bad guy, just hates spider-man. Also, he is too close to carnage. Carnage is a hard-core villain, but you can't have both of them on your list. And everyone has Galactus. ooooo noo here comes the world eater. Fool got beat by the fantastic four. They are NOT dope. Magneto anyone? C'mon, the world agreed to give him his own island.
