The Top Ten Pop Break-Up Anthems of All Time

James Hamel
Breaking up in never easy to do. But when it comes to writing a song about it there apparently isn't much that keeps music artists from writing new material that addresses this painful personal experience. In fact, given how many break-up songs there are and how successful they generally are, there must be a whole lot of relationships out there going wrong.

So if you are in the midst of burning everything your significant other left at your place, here are ten of the best pop break-up anthems of all time. Sure, sometimes it's fun to listen to an angry break-up song when you are in that place but you have to remember that all of these songs are written from a place of serious pain. So, do you have an ex who deserves to have one of these songs left on their voice mail? Go ahead. You know you want to do it.

Untouchable Face (Ani DiFranco)
There is no time like a good break up to start dropping the F-bomb right and left and Ms. DiFranco uses such an opportunity to use the old F-you to seriously powerful effect. This is Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" squared.

Rolling in the Deep (Adele)
A new classic from pop chanteuse Adele, "Rolling in the Deep" tells the story of a lover who should get a new place in h-e-double hockey sticks "because mine sure won't be shared." This song talks about the moment in a break-up where a person stops feeling sad and starts to get mad. Really, really mad. Adele's vocals are picture perfect and this song really should be a player for Song of the Year at the Grammy's next year.

Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson)
One of the most fun pop break-up songs ever recorded, this song is perfect for those moments when you are sitting in your house cutting up old photos of your ex. Be sure to sing along to the chorus and bring some friends for added effect. Just make sure you haven't broken into your ex's house to cut up said pictures.

Not Ready to Make Nice (The Dixie Chicks)
This song may have been recorded as the theme to the Dixie Chicks "break-up" with their once squeaky clean image into a more grown-up and world aware public persona but it works just as well as a relationship commentary. Who hasn't felt like they weren't quite ready to make nice after a break up?

Take a Bow (Rihanna)
Rihanna knows all about the cheating lotharios who disappoint in relationships so she pulls the emotional punches in this top notch break up track.

So What? (Pink)
Without question the most empowering break-up anthem of all time, this song reminds you that you are still a rock star and you have still got your rock moves. So what if you are broken up if all that's true. Thanks Pink, for reminding us of this.

Harder to Breathe (Maroon5)
A very, very angry song. For when you are very, very angry and the break-up is making it "harder and harder to breathe."

Telephone (Lady Gaga/Beyonce)
For those break-ups where the other party just won't stop calling you on your telephone.

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing (Jack Johnson)
A quiet and spare take on being in love with someone who was never truly in love with you. So be quiet and listen because this one is directed at you. You know who you are.

What Goes Around Comes Around (Justin Timberlake)
The final phase in the break-up process. Acceptance. Accepting that one day Karma is going to bite the other party in the rear end. That is the moment you should be listening to this song. Your break-up process will now be complete.
