The Top Ten Songs by Nirvana

J Hoff
Nirvana only made three studio albums before Kurt Cobain killed himself back in 1994. The band came to leave a print on music history that was far more lasting, however. The reason is simple: Nevermind. That album was important both in music history and in defining much of a generation, and although the impact may have disappeared now, Nirvana is still not forgotten.

And my favorite Nirvana songs are...

10. Come As You Are / Nevermind
I used to like this song a lot, but I don't like it as much as I used to. Hearing Cobain singing "I swear that I don't have a gun" makes the song a little special.

9. Smells Like Teen Spirit / Nevermind
The song that defines Nirvana the best, and also the best known song by the band. The song jumps between the hard hitting chorus and the softer verses. It's fairly cool but also very, very overrated.

8. Rape Me / In Utero
I like the wry humor in this song. It's offensive to some, but those should probably find something else to listen to anyway. The band actually wanted to perform this song at the MTV Video Music Awards show in 1992, but decided against it (despite playing a few chords of it).

7. Serve The Servants / In Utero
One of the more underrated songs on In Utero. I always liked it and I think it's comparable to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in style.

6. Heart-Shaped Box / In Utero
A somewhat simple song I believe was the most successful on In Utero. Fairly close to Nevermind in style.

5. The Man Who Sold The World / MTV Unplugged
Technically a Bowie song, but Nirvana made a pretty good cover of it. The song is only available at the Unplugged album.

4. Drain You / Nevermind
A heavy song with a cool guitar riff. Not the best known Nirvana song, but I always liked the simplicity of it.

3. About A Girl / Bleach
Probably the best song on the band's debut album, and easily the most melodic one. The version on the Unplugged album is about as good as the studio version.

2. All Apologies / In Utero
A softer song than most of Nirvana's and also one of their best. The version on the Unplugged album is better than the In Utero version.

1. In Bloom / Nevermind
I'm not sure how high this song is usually rated, but it always was my biggest favorite. The video is also cool.
