In this article, I will list many of the most important things that you should have on your Hurricane preparation list. I will also explain the importance of each item.
Those of us who have experienced hurricanes know what it's like to shop for important items before a Hurricane hits. Everyone scrambles around searching for particular items, only to find empty shelves. The truth is that no matter how far you have to drive to find these items, it's crucial that you have them, and it's very much worth the hassle.
Water and food is the most important thing on your list, in fact, it should be at the very top. Humans cannot survive without either, and as with any other disaster, you do not know how much damage the storm will cause, and how long it will take for things to return to normal. You should have enough for one gallon per person each day and a half gallon per pet each day, as well as enough food for a week. Make sure that all food is non perishable, and can be eaten upon opening, such as crackers, bread, and canned goods. Also stock up on paper plates, utensils, and a can opener. If you decide to purchase foods that do require cooking, always remember to keep cooking tools and fuels on hand. If you have children that require specific foods, such as infants or diabetics, make sure to have plenty.
Now that I have listed two of the most important things that you should have, I will now make available to you a basic list, explaining the importance of each item.
Medication - If you or a family member requires daily medication, it is extremely important to have enough to last you a month in case of a major delay in normalcy.
Non Prescription Medication and Medical Items - Hurricanes are dangerous, and in the event of an emergency, you want to be prepared for anything. Have bandages, medications, pain relievers, antibiotics, and other first aid items on hand. Don't be afraid to purchase a book explaining what to do in certain emergency situations.
Clothing - Hurricanes are extremely dangerous, and unpredictable. In case of flooding, it's always important to have dry clothing for all occasions. Make sure that you are able to stay warm in the event that the area you're staying in is overcome by water. In a disaster such as Hurricane Katrina, the threat of disease was extremely high, and having excess clothing, or even boots, can help protect you from bacteria.
Pillows and Blankets - This is self explanatory. While emotions are running high, you at least want to be physically comfortable. Blankets can keep you warm, as well as protect you from debris from high winds if necessary.
Flashlights, Radios and Batteries - When the lights go out, you will want to have several flashlights available to those in your family. Candles are also another option, and do not require batteries. To keep up with the storm updates, and warnings, keep a radio on hand. Make sure to have several packages of batteries to ensure you do not run out.
Important Documents and Memorables - In a hurricane, many houses are destructed beyond repair. Flooding can consume a house, destroying everything in its path. It's always a good idea to take important documents, such as Id's, health insurance cards, birth certificates, bank information, medical records, prescription information and so on. You may want to gather all family photos and keepsake items as well.
Children's Items - If you have children, this time is going to be extremely scary and even devastating. Make sure you have several things to keep your child occupied. Have them pack a large back with their favorite toys, books, and even movies. There are many small movie players available for travel, and this could be a great option for calming them down and taking their mind off of the situation at hand. Don't forget to stock up on batteries.
For infants - Don't forget special medications for infants, such as infant Tylenol and pain relievers. Also remember diapers, baby wipes, food and formula.
Pet Items - If you have pets, make sure to stock up on not only pet food, but accessories such as leashes, collars, litter boxes, and toys. In a disaster, things happen that are unexpected, so always remember to have an ID on your pets at all times. This will ensure that if separated, you will be reunited afterwards.
Toiletries - Toilet paper, soaps, feminine hygiene products, dental hygiene products, etc. You will have to dedicate a certain amount of water per person for washing each day.
Fuel for your vehicle - Always make sure to fill up your gas tank before a hurricane. You just don't know how things will play out afterwards, and many times, there is limited fuel, if any at all.
Over all, there are quite a few things that you should take into consideration when preparing for a hurricane. In your head, picture how you live your daily life, and compile a list of things that you simply cannot go without for several days, even weeks or months.
Remember, it's always better to be prepared. Preparation is everything.
