The Top Three Biking Trails in Austin, Texas

My Favorites so Far

Adam Amrani
There are a lot of great trails for biking, walking, and nearly everything in the Austin area of Texas. I enjoy riding my bike around the city a lot, and there are some really great places to ride. These are some of the best trails I have visited in Austin since moving here. I was always referred and brought to one of these places by a friend, and I think that is the best way to get to know a city.

1.) Barton Creek Green Belt

One of the most popular trails in Austin, and really fun to hike, or mountain bike. It is around eight miles long, and has a lot of vegetation and natural growth, as well as great places to stop along the trail to swim, since it is on the Barton Creek. The best times to go here are in the spring, when the weather is best and the creek is running at it's best potential. There is a curfew from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. The best place to access it is by the Zilker park entrance, off of Mopac.

2.) Walnut Creek Trails

Walnut Creek is another favorite of mine. It is located on Running Bird Lane, off of Metric blvd. It really is a beautiful biking trail, and has a lot of other great aspects other than just a trail. It offers random baseball diamonds and basketball courts along the trail, and also touches with a creek like the Barton Creek trail. It is a lot shorter than the first though, only 2 miles, and can be done easily with a family or younger friends. I recommend taking this trail with some activities other than biking in mind, as it is short and will only last a short amount of time on a bike. Stopping and playing games, or stopping for a picnic always will add something more to this trail.

3.) Wolf Mountain Trail

This is a slightly longer trail, and offers a lot of great views from the tops of the hills that dominate the trail. It is a bit harder to bike on, as you have to traverse over creek areas and much more rocky terrain, but I found it to be a great trail. It is about 7 or 8 miles long, and is a beautiful and great work out trail that I would recommend. It is located off of 290 dripping springs, in Johnson City. This is about an hour drive from the downtown city area of Austin, but is well worth the drive. Texas really has a lot of different climate and geographical regions to check out, and this is a great place to start. Parking is abundant so don't worry about that. Just pack a lunch and get ready for a great nature filled work out.

Check all three of these out to add to your list of places to get energetic and physical, in the great outdoors. There are a whole lot more biking trails in the Austin area, and I still have much to explore. If you have any ideas of other places to visit, don't hesitate to share with me!
