The Top Three Independent Coffee Shops in Seattle, WA

Sarah Toce
Seattle, Washington is mostly known for two things - coffee and rain. Both rain and coffee coordinate well together, but one is extremely popular on the damp winter days and I can tell you for a fact that it's not the rain.

Coffee. It has all of the properties of happiness, joy and contentment (well, to Seattleites anyway). There are the larger coffee corporations like Starbucks (born in Seattle at Pike Place Market with a headquarters located South of Downtown), Seattle's Best and Tully's and then there are the smaller, more homegrown enterprises such as Espresso Vivace, Bauhaus Books & Coffee and B&O Espresso.

Since the "big guys" take most of the spotlight on any other given day, let's look at the smaller, independent coffee shops mentioned above.

Espresso Vivace

Espresso Vivace is an Italian coffee beanery located in three different locations around Seattle. This art-infused independent local favorite is frequented by coffee-lovers from all walks of life and at all different times throughout the day. Stop by one of the following Espresso Vivace hubs for truly unforgettable coffee: 227 Yale Ave N. (in Alley 24 across from REI), 321 Broadway Avenue East (this is the famous espresso sidewalk bar), 532 Broadway Ave East (espresso bar at Brix).

Bauhaus Books & Coffee

Reading and coffee has never been so much fun. Enjoy a fresh cup of java while perusing Shakespeare and Robert Frost. Whatever your pick, you'll find it here along with delectable treats to behold. Doughnuts are out-of-this-world and the hip crowd is warm and inviting. The balcony above the main floor reminds one of sitting in New England with all the time in the day to enjoy the surroundings. Bauhaus Books & Coffee is located near Downtown Seattle at 301 E. Pine St.

B&O Espresso

There was once a rumor that this Seattle favorite was going to close its doors, but those rumors have since been put to rest. You know what that means; You're going to have a cup of espresso to last a lifetime in memories. B&O Espresso is unlike other independent coffee shops because the dessert truly holds its own and the atmosphere is more sit-down than "take your coffee and run". B&O Espresso is located just a few blocks from Broadway (exact address is 204 Belmont Ave E).
