The Top Twenty Highlights of the 2010 Vancouver / Whistler Winter Olympics

Melanie Dixon
It's been a glorious, and yet a heart-wrenching 17 days of the Winter Olympics, held in Vancouver and Whistler, BC, Canada. Here's my top twenty highlights of the Winter Games.

Let's start with the worst aspects of the games:

1. The death of young Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili on the luge track during practice.

2. The lack of snow until the very last days of the games.

3. The embarrassing cauldron malfunction at the Opening Ceremonies.

4. The death of Therese Rochette, mother of Olympic figure skater Joannie Rochette.

5. Lining up for hours to get into Olympic venues only to be told that we won't make it in before closing, and we had to leave.

6. The malfunction of the buses from California. The VANOC committee didn't consider that their vehicles would not be able to handle our harsh winter weather.

7, The mistreatment of the bus drivers hired for the games. Kudos to them for all their endurance.

8. The idiots who drove their cars into downtown Vancouver despite being told several times to take transit.

9. The online fraudsters and scammers who preyed on tourists.

10. The billions of dollars that the Winter Games will cost BC taxpayers for the rest of their lives.

Finally, here are the top ten positive highlights of the Games:

1. The Canadian Womens' Olympic hockey team earning gold!

2. Yu Na Kim with her fantastic Olympic Gold figure skating routine!

3. Joannie Rochette's Bronze figure skating medal for Canada!

4. The fantastic spring weather of the games.

5. VANOC's free ticket raffles, which meant a vast number of people I knew were actually able to attend the games.

6. The non-stop free events and free venues!

7. The free stuff that was given away at events from pins, to t-shirts, to calendars.

8. Canada's world record breaking collection of most Olympic gold medals ever!

9. The Canadian Mens' Olympic hockey team earning gold!

10. The performance of each and every athlete who played at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games!

Now that the Games are over, Vancouver can bask in the after glow of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. We hosted the world and they came!
