The Top Webcam-Enabled PCs for College Students

Phil Dotree

It can be hard to leave home to go to college, but the magic of technology is that it has a way of shortening any distance. Most newer computers have built-in web cams, which can be used with an online chat service like Google Chat or Skype to connect the student with parents, siblings and friends for a face-to-face meeting.

While all newer computers are pretty adept at using web cams--after all, the technology's been out for over a decade--some computers are better than others at handling the processing necessary for reliable streaming video, and some even include extra features that students will enjoy at college. Here's a look at four of the best college student computers for video web chats.

Toshiba NB305 - This small netbook has a great blend of power, portability and value. It costs around $400 and has a 10.1 inch screen and a built-in webcam in its LCD bezel. Its comfortable keyboard is a nice touch, as most netbooks have small, cramped keyboards--something you'll really notice halfway through writing a 30-page research paper.

Asus Eee Transformer - The Eee Transformer is the first Google Android tablet to have an optional keyboard dock. It basically transforms into a netbook when attached to its dock, so it works for writing papers and doing research. It also has a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video chats and an easy-to-use Android Honeycomb interface. Prices start at around $400.

HP DV7-4295US - While this entertainment laptop isn't going to win any "Catchy Name Of The Year" awards, its brilliant 17.3" screen makes it a great all-in-one solution for students, as it's capable as a dorm movie-viewer. It easily switches to web cam duty, with 8GB of RAM and a powerful Core i7 processor for handling heavy video processing requirements and a forward-facing web cam. It's costly, however, at about $1000-1100.

MacBook Pro - Make no mistake: by buying an Apple, you'll pay a little for the brand name. Even so, it's hard to find fault with the super-powered new line of MacBook Pro computers, as these laptops pack Core i7 processors, AMD graphics, and an HD camera for using Apple's Facetime software. It's an easy way to connect with family members who have Macs. Prices start around $1400.

All of these personal computers should handle video conferencing very well, but think about a college student's other needs as well as your budget when making a purchase. A computer can be a great educational tool as well as a great communication tool, and some quick research should help you to make a knowledgeable decision.
