The ugly truth of the matter is, it's actually quite possible to experience all the signs and symptoms of pregnancy without actually being pregnant. As my doctor told me, many early pregnancy symptoms are also signs of an oncoming period (headache, tender breasts, cramps, and the like). In fact, most medical providers will tell you that a missed period or positive pregnancy test is really the only reliable indication that you are pregnant so early on.
Unfortunately, when you're trying to get pregnant and desperately want a baby, forgetting about all of those little signs is difficult if not impossible to do. What's worse is that in my personal experience, building my hopes up each month only to have them dashed when I saw that I was not pregnant was pure torture. I had put myself on an emotional roller coaster and I couldn't seem to ever get off. What I finally did not only allowed me to feel better, but I got pregnant and got my beautiful baby in a short amount of time.
I finally managed to cope with my over-elevated hopes each month by simply forgetting about conceiving altogether. For me, I was never able to do this when I was actively trying to conceive. It was only after I had finally given up in utter frustration and assumed I would never be a mother that I got the biggest shock of my life...finding out that I was pregnant!
Throughout my journey in trying to conceive, the most common (and most irritating) advice I got was...stop trying and you'll get pregnant. This ended up to be true, although not in the way that I thought. It is true that when I stopped "trying" so hard to get pregnant, I did get pregnant. However, it was not because some magic switch had been turned on and now I suddenly had the ability to conceive, whereas before I did not. It was more that time flew by and I didn't even notice, and when I finally did get pregnant, I hadn't noticed the signs because I hadn't bothered to pay attention. So, in response to all of those ladies who told me to "stop trying" and I'd soon have a baby, I can say that they were correct. Sort of. I did get pregnant, and it did seem to happen quickly, but that was only because I wasn't putting myself through mental anguish and torture each month, not because doing so altered something in my body to make it easier for me to conceive.
The moral of my story that I want to share with others is as follows. There is no magic trick to getting pregnant. There is no one symptom that will tell you you're definitely pregnant. And there is no way to force pregnancy, try as you might. But most importantly, it is not worth it for you or for your significant other to torture yourself each month and agonize over whether you are or aren't. It is easier said than done, but it really is worth it to stop thinking about it and stop trying "too hard." I did and I got the biggest and best surprise of my life. My son.
