Let the revolution start here. The Toyota Camry must die. This sedan is not so much a car as a four wheeled appliance. To be honest I think there are refrigerators out there that have more of a personality. Plus, those keep Diet Cokes cool so they are of some use. The Camry is just a piece of Vanilla white corporate soul sucking meant to keep the minds of the masses dulled to the point of near intellectual illiteracy.
The average age of a Camry buyer is 52 years old and this "problem" speaks volumes about the future of Toyota and this absurdly boring sedan. When your best-selling vehicle is seen as an "old-geezers" car young people will avoid your brand like the plague. This problem makes the Camry the modern day Chevy Caprice which was a giant, boring whale of a car that used to sell like hotcakes to older folk.
The Camry backlash from the youth of this country also smacked Scion in the face when people with joint issues and arthritis realized the XB was easy to get in and out of and bought them up by the boatload. It is a sad fact but young people tend to stick to vehicles that other young people drive.
But this is not to say older people have no taste when it comes to picking out cars. Older people qualify for lower insurance rates and tend to have more money so they can usually afford the finest cars on the market. So why the heck are so many people picking the Camry when there is the Accord, Altima, Fusion, Jetta, Sonata, BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mazda6 lurking at nearby dealerships? Pretty much any choice is a better one unless you are one of those people who thinks ordering Rocky Road ice cream at 31 Flavors is "living your life on the edge."
When you consider that Toyota sold 436,000 copies of the Camry in 2008 it is easy to see that there are countless people out there who adore this narcolepsy inducing four wheeled jellybean. Although the Camry is still in the car sales lead (the Ford F-150 still trumps it year after year), there are signs that its grip is loosening. When Ford recently released its Ford Fusion hybrid it was announced to much fanfare that this stylish sedan had a fuel economy rating of 41 city/36 highway. The Camry hybrid only gets 33 city/34 highway. Man, that had to hurt. (Note: That is only 2 mpg better on the highway than the non-hybrid 4 cylinder. So why invest all that money in the hybrid version?)
Now if you are the kind of person who buys their suits at The Men's Wearhouse and thinks a Sunday afternoon at Wal-Mart is enjoying an afternoon of culture by all means buy a Camry. So if you like to lead your life in the same shade of pale beige available with the Camry interior then perhaps nothing in this article will mean anything to you. I don't care how reliable a Camry is, if you have a soul you absolutely must shop elsewhere for a family sedan.

Post a CommentI love my Camry! Toyotas are the most reliable vehicles on the road. I am one of those people that will always own a Toyota as my daily transportaion because of the reliability. Are there more fun cars out there? Probably but I will take not being stranded on the side of the road when a Ford or chevy breaks down around 100,000 miles any day over fun, and that is what a Toyota Camry provides. I hear people talk about there car being "in the shop for repairs" that is never me. Loyal Toyota customer forever.
Plain old Vanilla can be a good thing especially when all other flavors fail to match Camry's reliability and bullet proof reputation.
People number one reason people buy the Camary and all Toyota's is for reliability not handling. The Europeans are light years ahead of us on handeling and performance!
People who like cars would never buy one. For that matter what car lover would buy a Toyota. The only nice car they offered the Supra is long gone.
If corporate honchos at Toyota read this one, they may be throwing darts at it-or you! Toyota really needs to pay attention and at least TRY to give that car a tiny bit of pizazz. You harpooned it, in hilarious but accurate style. A great job.
Now THIS is one genuinely funny review! I agree that the Camry should also be put out to pasture (and the name blows, if you ask me!) "An appliance on wheels!" LOVE IT!!!!
