The Tragic Ending of My Daughter's Bike

Steven West
My daughter fell off her bike.
The bike was in need of repair.
My daughter escaped injury.
The bike did not.

I examined it.
I studied it.
I picked it up.
I tapped it.
I spoke to it.
I commanded it.

"You shall not be bent!
You shall not be broke!
Repair yourself!"

A moment of silence.
The bike was still in bad shape.
It's future was dim.
I lifted the bike high in the air.
I said a few final words of praise.
It had been a loyal companion.
I then thrust the bike and placed it with the other garbage.
And bade my daughter's bike farewell.
