Soulja Boy never was the smartest celebrity. Back in 2008 he gave a shout out to slave masters stating that they made it possible for young Blacks to have jewelry and tattoos. When Ice T went in on him part of his comeback was the fact that Ice T was older than WalMart. That statement actually is not true (Ice T is merely older than WalMart's ascent into being a national retailer, but WalMart was a local chain for far longer). He even took a cheap shot at the military, calling soldiers out of their name. He had a unique, boombastic sound that has been copied by everyone, and he is on the sidelines of the rap game.
But in spite of all of this 50 Cent took him under his wing. He even produced some beats for 50's latest album, which is still unreleased. He had collaborations with all of those hot artists that have evolved upon his sound, like Roscoe Dash and Lil' B. He got robbed, but came out of it alive. Now he is in trouble with the law for possession of drugs. It is very sad when you consider that he is set to play the part of the protagonist in a remake of the classic hip-hop film "Juice", and fill the boots of Tupac Shakur.
By now Soulja Boy could have been the MC Hammer of his generation, but one always walked away with a sense that he was just a young kid that was more infatuated with the possessions and trinkets of the rap game than he was with longevity. He tried to become a lyricist and put out a number of mixtapes, to no avail. Considering that this is hip-hop we are talking about, jail time might actually give him some credibility in the rap game.
Some people have a hard time handling the fame. Hopefully Soulja Boy matures into a young man. That is the only way he can differentiate himself form the young/little/boy aspect of the hip-hop culture that suggests that a 55 year old with the right ice, cash, and 20 year old groupies is living the life, and come back to reality with the rest of us.
