The Troll

Justin Germino
This was one of my Random Twitter poems written on June 8th 2009.

Today's random twitter poem was kind of crafted into a prose tale of a young man sent to determine what monster lives in a cave just beyond the village. The tale is left open ended, you can imagine if the young man manages to somehow survive, succeed, escape or is just food for the Troll. Thanks to the following twitter followers for the 11 words provided today (in blue):

@RemBeatZ(chicken), @Zorlone(fluctuate), @JenaIsle(cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene), @shemah(withdrawal), @numbnuggets(bromidrosis), @bethggwaz(flabbergasted), @R_Arblaster(quantifying), @katheesue(carnation), ElyssaD (Apathy), @MichaelVrijhoef(asphyxiation), @justzeros(bing)

The Troll

Chosen by the village to investigate
a monster living in a nearby cave
armed with only your wits and a small blade
and a single carnation tucked in your breast pocket
a token of love and luck from your woman

The cave mouth far behind you
your eyes suddenly frozen in stark disbelief
a man like monster nearly twelve feet tall
disproportionate with disturbingly rippled muscles
that fluctuate as if enhanced by Cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene

Flabbergasted, then nearly gagging
rank bromidrosis assaulting your senses
would you chance a hasty withdrawal
being just another cowardly chicken
terrified to stand your ground

Green ichor dripping from its razer teeth
it's eyes small and beady like Bing cherries
there is no quantifying the terror you feel
so thick as to cause asphyxiation
a certain deadly apathy comes over you

Somehow your body starts working
as the creature approaches and your doom eminent
your hand draws a sword that appears so puny
as the creatures comes within inches of your body
you strike with all your might and a final prayer
