Dr. Harold Levinson, a psychiatrist discovered this while treating other phobic patients and learning that they all had one thing in common and that was a Cerebellar Vestibular dysfunction. He published a book entitled, "Phobia Free" back in 1986, which discussed his findings. It is now out of print but a copy can be ordered from any bookstore.
An Ear Nose and Throat doctor can many times properly diagnose a person who thinks they may have this problem or suffers from panic attacks especially if they are accompanied by dizziness or nausea. There are many symptoms that are easily diagnosable that resemble panic disorder.
Before accepting a diagnosis of anxiety or panic disorder, a patient with these symptoms should first consider the possibility that it just might be a physical problem such as a heart condition as these can masquerade as mental illnesses.
A popular golf player a while back found that she suffered from a condition known as Super Ventricular Tachycardia when she was rushed to the Emergency Room during one of her games. She told the team of doctors that she had been diagnosed with panic attacks while in college. She not knowing any better took the diagnosis to heart and thought she was suffering from anxiety. Instead, she had a heart condition that required immediate attention. She was given an ablation which cleared her panic attacks right up.
The news of finding out for the first time the truth about a medical condition could have the potential for changing a person's life or the quality thereof. Recent discoveries have shown that those suffering panic attacks are three to four times more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke especially if they are postmenopausal women. Finding preventative treatment could save lives.
In the book "Excruciating Fear" the author talks about her own experience with panic attacks and how she found the physical diagnosis she had been waiting for for eleven years. It can be ordered from the author directly by going to windstorm_b@yahoo.com
