The True Meaning of Homeschool

Your Home as a Classroom

Maricia D. C. Johns
Something educational can be taught every day. There does not have to be a formal classroom setting to disperse knowledge. In fact, you don't really have to leave home to expound on something educational. You can do it from the comfort of your couch, in front of the television or even in the kitchen.

Let's say you believe in God as I do. You've taught or you are teaching your child to recite the Lord's Prayer. Explain the meaning to them. If you don't know the meaning yourself just go to the computer and search Lord's Prayer to get some assistance. One of the best interpretations comes from believe it or not the old television show Amos and Andy. This could also be a lesson in religion and also in history. It can bring about a discussion that will last a lifetime.

Watching old black and white movies with your children can be a lesson in history and health. While watching the movies, you can explain how smoking was the norm back in the day, but you can also point out how many of the actors eventually died from lung cancer. In a lot of the movies you can explain the racial stereotypes that were perpetuated doing those times.

If you can't get your child to watch black and white movies, then have a discussion with them about nutrition while they eat breakfast. Explain to them what a serving of cereal really is. Take out the measuring cup and let them see what a cup of cereal really looks like. Then measure out the correct amount that one should have for a serving of juice. It will be an eye opening experience for them and maybe you too. If they are having bacon, eggs and toast this information will shock them when they count of the number of calories and fat grams they are consuming in just eating breakfast. Two eggs, two pieces of bacon, two pieces of toast with butter and jelly will never look the same after you have this lesson.

If you can find old cartoons, you can have a fine arts lesson. The music back then was classical. Again, you can go to the computer and pull up the music, the composer and more.

Believe it or not television has some very educational programs on. There is the Discovery Channel, Food Network, CNN and more. These channels can lead to some lively discussions.

If your child decides they have had enough and decide to go outside, remind them that the great outdoors is a classroom in itself. You can teach almost anywhere.

Excellent points. Sad, but most parents fail to see these everyday opportunities to help their child(ren) learn.
