The Truman Family Farm was Once a Place Where Our 33rd President Lived
Hot Fun in the Summertime Series
By all accounts it seems that President Harry S. Truman lived a very simple life. He wasn't an outlandish type of guy. And even though he eventually became the 33rd President of the United States, he never forgot his Midwest roots.
An example of this simplicity is displayed at the Truman Family Farm in Grandview, Missouri. Some friends and I spent a relaxing afternoon there. It was exciting knowing that Harry S. Truman at one time walked these same rooms that we were now stepping into.
It is operated by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Additionally it is designated as a National Historic Site.
Harry S. Truman spent fourteen hard-working years of his youth in this humble abode. Farming was something he was quite adept at.
According to a quote on a pamphlet he says, " -- riding one of these plows all day, day after day, gives one time to think. I've settled all the ills of mankind in one way and another while riding along seeing that each animal pulled his part of the load". Perhaps more presidents and politicians should spend some time here too.
This home is open for guided tours only. The tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is $4.00 per person. Children 15 and under are free. Group tours can be made by prior request. Hours of operation are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 to 4:00 Memorial Day through Labor Day. Call 816-254-9929 for more information or visit their website at www.nps.gov/hstr.
