The Truth According to Tom Waits - House Where Nobody Lives

Bob Langham

Tom Waits has a way of stripping away the shiny layers that exist all around us and revealing the truth embedded in this thing called life. He offers some of this truth in his song House Where Nobody Lives. If you have ever felt the tug of envy or jealousy toward those who may have a bigger, more expensive house and wondered why you aren't lucky enough to be living in similar conditions, then this musical truth is for you. When it comes down to it, all that square footage, the decorative columns, and elaborate landscaping is just gift wrapping serving to impress. It's what's inside the box that really matters.

Turn this song up loud in the car the next time you're driving through one of those affluent neighborhoods to help you resist that old hobo jealousy yanking on your sleeve and appealing to your ego. You'll be a better person for it.

Favorite Lyric:

"So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver
Don't trade it for gold
I have all of life's treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
Ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house
It's a palace for sure..."
