The Truth About BSL (Breed Specific Legislation)

WENDY HAIRE
BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is a law which is being passed in many states. The law allows the community to outlaw ANY breed of dog that is they see fit as dangerous. This law not only hurts good family pets but breeders as well. The time has come to try and stop the law from going into affect.

There is a saying among the BSL advocates "punish the deed not the breed". In other words make the laws stiffer for bad owners. Bad owners create bad dogs. As an owner of a mixed dog ( rodeisian ridgeback and brindle pit bull) I believe in how the animal is raised. I was nervous at first about having this dog but with proper raising and love he is the most loving loyal dog which I have ever owned.

Back to the way that BSL works as I stated before ANY breed of dog can be outlawed from the smallest to the largest. If stiffer laws and not just a slap on the wrist was given to these bad owners then it would stop or at least slow it down some.

Do the research of how many people are killed every year by drunk drivers, murders, and any other violent act that you can think of even shark attacks. It is a proven fact that only 2 people die per year from pit bull attacks.

Media hypes pit bull attacks and there are just as many other dog attacks on a regular basis by other breeds. The media focuses on the pit bull. Society has stereotyped this animal. Stereo type bad owners and make the lawmakers punish the owners not the dog. Some of them are not beyond help and can be rehabilitated. I do believe that the ones that are beyond they point of no return need to be euthanized. It is a cruel and sad society that punishes dogs just because of what they are. The first dog to ever gain awards for the U.S. military and they still us his picture as a icon today. Pits are highly intelligent and have most recently have been used as service dogs not only for the handicapped but law enforcement as well.

In short people need to start doing the research on BSL and what it covers. Do research on the pit bull breed. People need to make their own informed decision and not just what the media portrays these wonderful animals to be.

Excellent article! I don't know what I'd do without my beloved pittie :-)

In my opinion, there are NO bad doggies! Just bad owners!

Agreed 100%. I just lost my much loved Rottweiler, Samson on Inauguration Day. He was a huge critter who looked fearsome in the extreme. He was nothing like he looked. BSL would have denied my family & I the pleasure of this magnificent creature's loyalty and comfort for the 8.5 years of his too short life. ANd when i get another Rottie, and I will, I would move to another locality if they tried that BSL in my town. Group think & ignorance are indeed rampant.

They're also certified K9s and Search & Rescue dogs. So if you're in a terrorist attack and there's a pitbull, rottweiler and GSD ban hope someone is close with something else!
