The Truth and Controversy About Sexuality

What is the most prominent definition of sexuality? Many would define sexuality as it personally relates to their lifestyle. This would substantiate their cultural, religious or political stance. Often, this is the cause of the breakdown amongst our nation. I am willing to challenge your position; please accept this chronicle definition. Sexuality refers to sexual behaviors in all sexual organisms.

Although sexuality has been and continues to be a controversial and uncomfortable topic, it is necessary to create an avenue to provide a serene approach to sharing information regarding the subject. Previous decades of generations found it a routine task, a customary part of growing older and maturing. Contrarily, it appears that recent generations do not posses the same sentiments about sexuality. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the increase of sexually transmitted disease, unplanned pregnancies or even suicide. It is a fact that most preceding families engaged their young in one to one detailed discussions about the "birds and the bees." Yet, to date, our youth as well as young adults are rapidly dying from STDs and/or HIV/Aids due to lack of knowledge, low self- esteem and the inability to make better choices regarding their sexuality. More babies are coming into the world with little to no chance at all for a life that they deserve. Suicide is steadily increasing amongst the young population that is confused about their sexuality. They have no one in their families to talk to about homosexuality because they would be ostracized and/or disowned. The Church turns them away or if they are welcomed to stay, they are predestined for mortality. In lieu of all these disturbing issues, we must recognize the obvious. Sexuality amongst humans needs not to be ignored or frowned upon. It requires acknowledgment and at least understanding if not acceptance. This would certainly deter and/or decrease the percentage of devastating consequences.

Heterosexuality, Homosexuality and Bisexuality are prominent markers of human sexuality. Heterosexuality is, of course, the "norm" and is accepted across the nation. But, what we must realize is that an individual with positive values, morals and character takes precedence over your personal views of unfamiliar lifestyles or sexuality. A female homosexual once shared with me that she had befriended a co- worker and thought it was time to share their lifestyle with them because the heterosexual co- worker had become comfortable enough to communicate information about their personal life. The response that she received could have been heartbreaking, but fortunately it really wasn't that detrimental, just unbelievable. The co- worker stares at her in obvious disbelief and finally thundered, "But, I liked you though!" The homosexual thought and stated, "my God, what on earth does that mean!" Point being, one is so enthralled into their own lives and what is suppose to be; heterosexuality, because of its predominance or acceptance, we forget about the more imperative issues at hand. Sexuality is not to be prejudged or feared and requires great attention. Disease, unplanned pregnancy or death has no preference; age, race, creed, color or sexuality.
