The Truth About Gods and Angels

One Writer's View of Two Religious Myths

I can talk to God. God wants me to tell everyone that He is not an invention in the mind of man. God wants me to let people know He is a true being. He also gently reminds me to use capital letters for any pronouns I use for Him. This makes Him very happy. I can talk to any God I want, from Jesus to Jehovah, and each almighty tells me the same thing: make sure everyone knows that divine beings are not inventions of the human mind. It does not matter if you can talk to Him; it only matters that I can. I have a personal relationship with the Gods of every major religion in the world, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Jainism. I can also send text messages and e-mails to the infinite spirits of lesser-known doctrines like Confucianism and Taoism in China and the primal-indigenous religions of Africa, but these Gods have less clout and I tend to ignore their requests for face-to-face talks. I simply do not have the time to meet with every God in person.

God wants me to tell everyone that He is very disappointed in the people who make fun of him by saying he is a myth or a fairy tale or a figment of our imaginations. How could anyone, He asks, believe that He is merely an invention in the minds of men? He wants everyone to know that he is a true being with real feelings, and when someone calls Him an invention it hurts Him deeply. It also makes him angry. Believe me, the wrath of God is no laughing matter. I do not have to worry about the wrath of God because I believe in Him and have a personal relationship with Him. I have faith in God. My faith gives me the power to live forever. It does not matter if you have faith in Him; it only matters that I have it. My faith allows me to talk to God anytime I need Him. I am the messenger of God and He wants me to lambast anyone who thinks I am delusional for believing in Him. It does not matter what you think; it only matters that I have faith in the one true God and that I am going to live forever.

Is God a true being or a myth? Does God exist or is He just an invention in our minds? No matter what any country or culture chooses to call the men upstairs, the entire cast of deities and demigods from Allah to Zeus are nothing more than a magical and mysterious theatrical production known as the mythology of man. But do no take my word for it. There are more than 2,850 deities at godchecker.com who will all tell you the same thing: Any level-headed writer who looks and listens closely enough will know the simple truth about Gods: they are nothing more than fictional beings from the fantastical world of human imagination.

Angels are also mythological characters created by the writers and artists of the world. Angels are also figments of our imaginations. Angels, along with many other Christian concepts in the English language, are part of religious mythology. As myths, they are nothing more than stories, traditions, and beliefs passed from generation to generation. Angels, like gods and demons, are only "real" in our minds. The rest is opinion and speculation. To see the fine line between what is real and what is imagined, to understand the difference between fact and fiction, one must be able to view the world and all the words that define it clearly and impartially. One must be truly enlightened.

The human imagination is one of the most potent and powerful forces on the planet. We are creatures of the imagination. We love fairy tales and fantasies, but usually give up our inventions and illusions (Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy are the first to come to mind) during our childhoods. This is true in most countries and cultures around the world. Occasionally, however, as in the case of the curiously hip and constantly celebrated angel, creations and fabrications of the brain never go out of style. Westerners love and cherish the celestial beings from above, the divine guardians and messengers from heaven. Christians have been apotheosizing seraphs and praising cute and cuddly cherubs since the first draft of the Bible. The Book of Books is one of the greatest fables of all time, starring the one of most popular spirits of all time. It is all make believe. None of it is real, except in the minds of those who choose to believe it.

Of course, it does no harm to believe in gods and angels. Creative thought and imagination are good for the soul. But what we believe and what is real do not always go hand in hand. No matter how much we revere them, no matter how real we think they are or how much we want to believe in them, the truth is gods and angels are no more than apparitions in the dreamscapes of our minds. They are like lovable characters in the favorite fish stories we desperately want to swallow hook, line, and sinker. It is time to grow up and accept gods and angels for what they really are: make-believe myths and fairy-tale fabrications from the keyboards of the human heart.
