The Truth About Marriage

Here Are Some Interesting Statistical Facts About Marriage

Arthur Kirk
Doesn't it seem like many people are getting married much more often than once these days as marriages fail? Well according to census bureau statistics released recently from surveys they ran ins 2004, that isn't necessarily the truth. According to the survey conducted by the census bureau more than half of both men and women have only made one trip down the aisle.

The exact numbers are that in 58 percent of women had only been married once. Meanwhile a slightly lower percentage of men, 54 percent, have made just one trip down the aisle to get married. The survey only took into consideration adults fifteen years of age or older. The percentages of men and women who had been married twice was pretty even with 12 percent of men having walked down the aisle twice and 13 percent of women. Three percent of both men and women revealed they were married more than twice.

It appears marriages might be lasting a little shorter now though for those that fail. According to the survey most first marriages end within the first eight years of the marriage. Meanwhie, 79 percent of women that were married between 1955 and 1959 celebrated a fifthteenth wedding anniversary. Only 57 percent of women who were married in the mid to late 1980's reached that fifteen year milestone.

Out of those that told the census bureau they had been divorced and were over 25 years old, 52 percent of men had remarried. A slightly lower percentage of women over twenty five that have been divorced remarried, at 44 percent. Among those that have been divorced and remarried the average time between the divorce and second marriage was between three and four years.

It has become clear that marriages are not lasting as long as they once did, back in the era of the baby boomers from these survey results. The news everyday is full of divorces. Ask anyone that you know who is over twenty one years old, and it's likely they can name at least one of their friends who has been divorced after a marriage shorter than eight years.
