The Truth is Simply the Best Known Lie

Damon C Dennis
The smartest people in the world once thought that the Earth was flat. This became the accepted truth because it was the best known idea of the shape of the world. The truth is not necessarily a lie, but the truth is simply what a majority of the population believe it is. This happens frequently in religion, science, and in research. Everything that is considered to be true is because it is believed to be true. Sometimes, one should wonder how it came to be true. Is it because an oligarchy of people said so? Is it because no one can find a better answer? Could there have been a mistake in the research?

Religion is based on faith. Faith that is told to its followers is passed down for many generations. Faith in a religion means believing in the religion because of what is said to its followers. Nobody can prove if it is the truth or not. Today in our secular society, it is more common to believe that an explosion created the universe. This is because scientists say so. Just a few hundred years ago it was believed that a higher being created the universe because religious leaders said so. Is something considered to be true just because a respected person says so?

Science is filled with theories. Many of their facts, studies, and laws come from these theories. A theory is simply an idea formed from pieces of information. Who is to say that the information gathered to create the theory is true? It is oxymoronic to use a theory to prove a fact, it simply means to prove and idea with a hunch. That is not to say that something is science aren't true. It is very likely that scientists know what they are talking about most of the time. Believing everything that they say is not so believable.

To err is human. That means in studies and in research mistakes can be made. They don't happen all of the time, but they do happen occasionally. When an experiment is done, they need to isolate a variable. Isn't it within the realm of possibility that a variable could be unidentified and thus not isolated? This would mean that all information gathered and all information based off of the research is skewed. This alters the truth, but it is accepted because it is well known.

During an argument the winner is decided by who was the most correct. What if the winner and the judges had misinformation? They wear the label of telling the truth, but it is simply the best known lie. It is those that challenge the truth who are called liars. It is the liars that are right who are either deemed crazy or geniuses.

The truth is not always true. That is an undeniable truth. To believe everything that is seen and heard is gullible. Today people hear one opinion or view, and it is taken as a fact. If someone surrounds themselves with people that view the world differently and they stick around. Then their views and opinions will assimilate to that of their peers. This is because if everyone they know claims it to be true, it is believed. The truth may be accurate most of the time, but it also should be questioned most of the time.

Thanks, I always try to look at things differently, but that gets me in more arguments than agreements.

I really like this. I try to teach all three of my kids to think for themselves instead of believing what everyone else tells them. Nice insight!
