The Truth and Tricks About the Google Nexus One

Google's New Phone Explained

RH
It has been hailed as the "iPhone Killer" for months now, but it is very hard to believe that Google's new Nexus One is truly up to the hype. There are several keys to overthrowing the current king of the mobile world. For one, the iPhone is now a household name when it comes to smart phones. It is the same principle as soda. You don't ask someone if they would like a cola. You ask if they want a Coke. It doesn't matter if it is RC, Pepsi, or an actual Coke, they are all referenced the same. The iPhone has this same grip on the market right now. It will be very hard to break away from this. With the millions of apps on the iTunes store, some people will remain with the status quo. The fact that the Nexus One is more open source friendly may alter this though. It is very difficult to publish an app for the iPhone if you are not an Apple developer. They are constantly removing native apps that have been created by other SDK's (Software Development Kit). While millions of developers want to create apps for the iPhone, only the select thousands are permitted. With the Nexus, anyone can design, develop, and publish apps on any OS. This will draw a lot of the talent and skill that is currently fighting hard against Apple. With all the advances in iPhone app porting software, you will soon see all the iPhone apps available on the Nexus One. This will greatly level the playing field. You will not have to worry about not having your favorite apps if you switch.

The true advantage of the Nexus One is not just the better performance, faster speeds, choice of networks, or even the better display. The true power of Google's latest phone is the ability to download anything from anywhere. This means there is no monopoly on apps. You are not limited to just one store any longer. You can find free software for use on your phone from third parties and you don't need to "jail break" your phone. This limitless availability of functions, games, and apps will draw a lot of people that are unhappy with the high prices of smart phone apps. It doesn't end there either. With a simple USB connection, you can easily access any file on your computer, or vice versa. This makes productivity a breeze. With one of the most powerful voice enabled texting engines, you can write to any text field with your Nexus One. Late for that meeting, but still need to add to your presentation? Plug the presentation into your Nexus and talk it through all the updates on your way. No need for typing or even looking at your work. You can easily and accurately dictate your memo, presentation, resume, email, text message, graphic novel, or whatever.

There are also some very interesting options that you can perform on this little computer phone. One of these is the ability to play games or movies. Not only can you add any downloadable computer game, you can also download movies to your phone. For all of those long trips or meetings, slap in the headset and watch away. If you are using it to suffer through your bosses presentation, you may want to avoid any acting out at the movie or laughing at the jokes. With all of the television stations on the internet, you won't even have to miss Ellen on the new American Idol, but if you are watching that, you likely have an iPhone anyways. This is all just the beginning. There are several things in the works for these little phones. With the open source buzz surrounding these, there are sure to be a multitude of advances to come out before the summer. The operating system is constantly getting upgraded, new apps are in the works, and the touch and tethering functions are being improved as we speak. There is no where to go but forward with this innovation.

There is a dark side of this phone. The big problem is that Google did not get these to the stores prior to selling them. At the time of this article the phones were only available directly from Google. This may not sound like a big deal, but it really is at this point. There is a lot of rumor activity surrounding this phone and how difficult it is to use. A lot of this is thought to be generated from iPhone fans and Apple insiders. They may be trying to snuff out the Nexus One before it really gets to launch. There are also the technologically challenged trying to get the most out of the phone, when they find it difficult to dial long distance. This is a very beefy phone with many options, and if you just blunder through, it may seem to be less capable or more difficult than your base models that come free with activation. If this is your first new phone since the '90's, you may want to study up a little before passing judgment. The real problem is that people can not go to the store and take it for a spin to see if it is truly the king of phones, or if it is a flop that was pushed too fast. By having to base all of your buying decision on the word of others, you may be more reluctant to buy it on blind faith. I think it will really take off once people can see for themselves how awesome these things are. If anything, it will double as a phone and an external hard drive. For about the same price as an external, it may be worth the gamble
