The Truths About Getting Sprayed by a Skunk

Janet Cey
There are many websites and articles on animals getting sprayed by skunks, but what would you do if you got sprayed by one? Unfortunately having been sprayed by a skunk I can tell you by experience what you can do to get rid of the smelly skunk odor. You may be wondering how in the world did I get sprayed by a skunk. Well my story is quite simple on how I got sprayed by the cute white stripped and black creature. It involved me taking out the trash to the trash can that is in my back yard. Unfortunately at the time out back porch light wasn't working and I couldn't see the skunk that was 3 ft away from me and when I opened the trash can to put the trash in it got scared and sprayed me.

However don't freight the smell of the skunk isn't too bad.. Actually who am I kidding, when the skunk sprayed me it went into my mouth and I almost felt like vomiting, and the smell was three times worse. When I came back into the house my sister gave a horrible face and covered her nose. Fortunately I have tested some of the myths on getting rid of skunk smell after getting sprayed.

Here are some things you can do to get rid of the skunk smell:

Tomato Sauce

Alot of people say that if you get sprayed by a skunk that tomato sauce can get rid of the smell. It is true that tomato sauce did help in getting rid of some of the odor. However, what people don't mention is the amount of tomato sauce you need to help get rid of the smell. I can tell you that I used at least 20 cans of tomato sauce, and one bottle of ketchup. Yes this choice doesn't sound plesant. In fact it actually is really disqusting, especially when you put tomato sauce all over your body, hair, and face. However, having the choice of smelling like skunk or pasta sauce I think that tomato sauce wins. I do have to point out though that even after taking a bath in tomato sauce the essence of skunk is still on you body.

Repeated Showers or Baths

So after taking my tomato sauce bath I still did have the essence of Skunk so I decided to have a few repeated showers or baths before going out. When having these showers and baths I used alot of soap, shampoo, and conditioner and trust me at times like this it's good to have flower smelling soaps.

Lotions and perfumes

If you still think you smell like skunk after washing repeatedly you can do what I did and put some nice smelly lotion or perfume on. Just remeber not to put to much on becuase then you will smell super strong of skunk and perfume or lotion.

Wash Laundry Repeatedly with hot water

So you are probably wondering how I got the smell off of my clothes. Let's just say you may have to wash your clothes a few times to delute the smell. Hot water can help as well to get the oil from the clothes.

Be patient and Time will help

Eventually after a few days all the skunk smell was completely gone meaning all the smelly oils left my skin. In this case you just have to be patient and hope the smell leaves eventually.

These are just some things I did that worked for me to get rid of the smell after being sprayed by a skunk. Other people may have other methods which is great, and if you do please share because who knows I may just get sprayed by a skunk again.

My dog was just sprayed and we called the vet. They told us to use peroxide, Downy dish soap (cuts the oily grease) and baking soda. NEVER get this in the dogs eye though. The peroxide is very dangerous for their eyes. It worked really well. The smell of a skunk up close and personal is not what you would expect. It is more like a chemical or burned rubber smell. Very odd.

Oh wow-- I am glad I haven't been sprayed. I have happened upon skunks but was always able to make a hasty retreat ( because it was light enough to see them). Some pet stores online and off sell odor neutralizer for skunk spray . I don't know how well they work as I've neverhad to use them ( thankfully!)
