Unless you are a real car buff, you may not have heard of Tucker automobiles until the release of the 1988 movie, "Tucker: The Man and His Dream," starring Jeff Bridges. Although well known in the auto industry, not until Hollywood brought Preston Tucker and his accomplishments to the big screen, did the Tucker Torpedo grow in popularity and desirability.
The 2012 Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale provides the Tucker another chance to take on all challengers, as it rolls onto center stage at Saturday's event. How will the Tucker Torpedo fare against some of today's most collectible cars? Let's take a look at the Tucker and its competition.
1948 Tucker Torpedo
Just as Steve Jobs thought outside the box in technology, Preston Tucker was a visionary in the car industry. Although his ideas were considered by some to be radical, he was willing to stake his reputation on his version of a better car design to challenge Detroit's Big Three. The Tucker Torpedo, as it was called in the early stages of its development, had the engine mounted in the rear, a headlight that turned in the direction the car was steered, futuristic aerodynamics, and a host of safety features. Of the 51 vehicles built, this Tucker has been professionally and authentically restored.
1954 Mercedes - 300SL Gullwing Coupe
This German sports car classic, with its signature doors that swing up, instead of out, is one of 146 Gullwings produced in 1954. With just under 4,200 miles, this all-original, except for a repaint to its original silver color, would be at the top of any collector's list of must-haves.
1954 DeSoto - Adventurer II Coupe
This vintage DeSoto is a one-of- one concept car produced through a joint venture between Chrysler and Ghia. Voted one of the top ten concept cars ever constructed, this vehicle features many design innovations that would not be seen until decades later. This Adventurer has been displayed twice at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and remains in show-quality condition.
1930 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Town Car
As the saying goes, this car is a "real Doozie." Meticulously maintained to museum-show standards, this is only one of four ever built, and it is expected to be the only one offered for sale in this decade.
1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow
A luxury "muscle car" of the era, this 12-cylinder speedster was able to attain 115 miles per hour, which was truly amazing for its time. However, what sets the Silver Arrow apart is its striking styling, a combination of classic and art deco. Only five versions of this model were ever built, with only three still in existence.
1947 Bentley Mark VI Coachworks
Built for display at the 1947 Paris Auto Show, this Bentley is a winning example of British craftsmanship and French design. With flowing body lines and accenting chrome trim on a black low-slung convertible body, this car gives the illusion of motion, even when sitting still. Not accustomed to taking second place, it has won over 50 awards.
No Losers at Barrett-Jackson's Auction
With such an exceptional group of historical automobiles, the only sure winner at Barrett-Jackson's auction will be the viewing audience. Although only one of these magnificent machines can take home the title of highest sale price, just to be showcased alongside this elite group would surely make Preston Tucker smile. Ironically, had the Tucker Torpedo become the first model in a successful car company, it is unlikely it would be the coveted, classic car it is today. Nevertheless, Preston Tucker is still able to offer his vision of a better car, while competing with the best-of-the-best in collectible cars.
