The Turkey and the Deer

Michigan Thanksgiving

The Turkey and the Deer

I've heard on good authority,
From turkey and from deer,
A joyful joint thanksgiving's planned
In Michigan this year.

December first,
The deer will host,
Location's undisclosed.

A forest celebration like
The Pilgrims and their guests.
Another hellish season past
For Toms whose necks survived,
And think of how November seems
For deer who almost died.

Five Hundred thousand men with guns
Are looking just for you,
And if they find you
Shoot to kill,
Then eat you in Deer Stew.

What a howdy-do they'll have
The day the shooting stops.
A few short days past
Turkey Day, that horrid
Sick misnomer.

It makes me think of one thing more
In Michigan this year.
Thank you Lord for making me
Neither a turkey nor a deer.
