The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Movie Review

Team Edward... Team Bella.... Team Twilight?

J G Hodnette
Eclipse is the third in the series of Twilight based films. In this cult classic series, it's easy to get lost as to what is going on. Does Eclipse do a good job of allowing people who may have never read the books to enjoy a flick, or is it like walking into a foreign film with no subtitles? Will these film be a hit with the die-hard fans? Read on to find out.

Plot

For those who haven't read the Twilight books, the plot will be the first thing that gives you a headache about this film. There are no hints given as to why characters act the way they do or what the significance of much of the action is. There seems to be a general mentality of "if you don't know now, then you never will." So while you may be tempted to sneak into this one with your girlfriend and whisper a few questions when you're confused, don't even try it--it will be a long night of constant whispering that will ruin the film for both of you. The plot involves someone creating powerful vampire "newborns" to destroy Bella and Edward who are seen as a threat for some reason. Jacob, the young werewolf that also deeply needs Bella's affection, calls a truce between Edward's family and the werewolves so that they can gang up and destroy these newborns.

So What's the Deal?

Unfortunately this film feels thrown together in a lot of ways. The plot drags along in a copy of the book--apparently because anything shortened would anger the fans. This may be a good thing if you really don't want a single missing line, but for most of us it just makes for a boring film. There is a kissing scene with Edward as well as a discussion on the importance of abstinence before marriage, which seems oddly out of place. The newborn vampires are treated a bit like an old power-ranger villain: stupid and a bit funny. Besides all of this, there is also some poorly done CGI work. After films like Toy Story3 show us what computers nowadays can do, there is really no excuse for the way the wolves in this film look circa 1995.

Conclusion

The film brings what it says it will bring: teenage angst, fighting vampires and werewolves, and plenty of closeups of Edward and Jacob so you can decide which one is worthy of your thought. For most of us out there, however, the film will not only be completely impossible to understand, but also a visual bore. There is only so many times that we can stare at Taylor Lautner's pecks as we try to understand what everyone is talking about before it's game over. The pale, angsty, and well dressed vampires aren't much more interesting either. For those who are huge fans of the series, you will find what you are looking for, most likely. Critics give it between a 4 and 6/10.
