The Twin Connection: Does it Really Exist?

An Identical Twin Speaks

Lars Yuan
I stumbled upon an interesting article by Debbie LaChusa online the other day called The Twin Connection: Myth or Reality? about the twin connection. She is a fraternal twin and has claimed that she has experienced this phenomenon called the twin connection with her twin sister. She recalls a period in her thirties when she would think about her twin sister and immediately receive a call from her.

As a 20-year-old identical twin myself, I have always been highly skeptical about this connection. We have had many moments in which we have said the same word or phrase at the same time, but I attribute this simply to us growing up very closely together. Before college, we were almost inseparable, doing almost everything together. We grew up in the same environment and slept in the same room until high school. So you would imagine that I would not be a surprised if we were both thinking of the same thing at a certain moment.

LaChusa says that her connection with her other half occurred in adulthood after they had bonded. In their childhood, they had fought a lot and were competitive possibly because their parents encouraged their separate individuality.

It was quite the opposite for me. My mom used to love dressing us in the exact same outfits. She was proud of the fact that we were twins. We would constantly get the, Are they twins? remark when she took us outside. No, we just look exactly alike, and just in case you did not notice we are dressed exactly alike as well.

As a shy kid, I did not like the attention. I cannot recall the exact age when we started to not dress alike, but I still remember a picture of us wearing the same clothes in middle school. (Cringes.)

We did fight, but we were as close I can imagine two brothers can be. And yet, I cannot recall any bizarre coincidence or ever thinking of him when he was thinking of me. Perhaps this is something that develops in later adulthood.

LaChusa seems very convinced that it exists, collecting many examples around the world and is the founder of TwinConnections.com.

Since going off to college in New York, away from my home in New Jersey, the bond between my brother and I has weakened, but we remain very close. I look forward to a day when I can experience this connection for myself¡Xif such a connection does exist at all.
