"Divided by family and regions"
thats how she labeled the photographs
but there were so many missing in the N. file
maybe Seta had refiled the pictures when I was gone
but it was 3 a.m in France so I didn't want to wake her
Erica had classes all day
and she wouldn't be home until Thursday
but Erica is so detailed and organized
that it didn't make sense for the photographs to be misplaced
The boxes...color coordinated
two red ones labeled D1 and D 2
I shouldn't have had that many in D
then I looked at two photographs
astonished...I couldn't believe it
the two children had the same eyes
same lips, same nose
such striking resemblance
how could I have not noticed
All the times i had visited them...
talked to them, photographed them
and I didn't notice
until i put the photographs side by side
Erica's mistake or Seta's
"memory is a selection of images...some imprinted indelibly in the brain..others elusive"
thats what Kasi Lemmons says
Memory plays games with the mind sometimes
How was it possible that two people who looked exactly alike could escape my memory
to the point where i never identified that they were twins
or that they were even related?
the only thing that separated them was the setting, location
all other attributes remained the same
true seperation at birth
the violence, the rapes, concentration camps
cramped together like animals
no bathroom, no water, no food
stravation hopes of reincarnation
desolate..the smell of death that lingers
both of them experienced it
separated at birth..yet the same experiences
the twins
they told me their stories over and over
but i never realized their truths were so alike
how strange?
displaced, depressed, discouraged
with no one to rescue them, truthfully
the twins
forever scarred, still abandoned
the both of them... lost everything
same treatment
same features...exactly the same complexion
the twins
separated at birth
Darfur and New Orleans...
Darfur... your ethnicity is something you can't control
New Orleans...Hurricaine Katrina..something you couldn't control
yet you're dying for it..you died because of it
the new Schindler's list
they kill you by the minutes as the world watches
still hoping...still abandoned...scarred
the new Holocaust..the one everyone swore would never happen again
is happening
Save Darfur, Save New Orleans
genocide in black...same complexion
displaced refugees in your own countries
Erica and Seta couldn't tell the difference between the two of you
so they put the photographs in the red boxes
labeled Darfur 1 Darfur 2
they didn't know one was New Orleans
because they look so much alike
it's strange... how could i have not known that you were related
twins actually
Darfur and New Orleans
our Holocausts

Great Read. Things that make you wonder!!!
Africa has the most natural resources in the whole world. The most gold most diamonds most minerals. The Darfur genocide is about oil and greed. The chinese have secured the iron in Liberia. There has been a discovery of oil in Angola which has caused a lot of buzz and . the Chinese are about to start drilling. As if thats not enough the chinese have secured all the copper mines in Zambia which is the largest producer of copper. They don't care about the safety because look at the recent bomb blasts in Zambia that killed all those people. Everyone is securing the natural resources from Africa at the expense of the Africans. Our own politicians are blinded by the perks but they get mad at the journalists for reporting massacres. People are suffering please why should we need speak of it. Are we not all God's children?
with gas as high as $4.00, the world wonders what is going on. Just like blood diamonds so is the story behind the oil running the chinese economy. It is one of the fastest growing economy in the world and partly because of the oil FROM DARFUR!!! When many africans are dying, the chinese are benefitting. I respect Mr Steven Spielberg for having pulled out of the olympics. Talk of a man of principle that is what we have in this man. all those saying stop darfur need to say " Stop the Chinese from exploiting the Africans". first it was the triangular slave trade with the western world being involved, now it is a different form aparently legal from the Eastern world. "Stop blood oil STOP" when it comes to certain groups people the world doesn't act. the peril they might be facing is not taken seriously like in New Orleans and the classic being Rwanda just like Darfur!
I get it. Darfour and New Orleans look exactly alike & experience the same things but on different continents.
