The UK's Worst Mistake: Welcome to the Nuclear Generation

Alex Dotsch
Nuclear Power is the dirty green option. It basically takes the problem of CO2 emissions, becomes a solution and then creates a new problem. Nuclear Power is the wrong direction. Even though if many are built in the long term it will reduce CO2 emissions, they produce radioactive waste that must be stored at sites around the UK. Would you like your front garden to become a Ground Zero for Nuclear Waste? I think not.

Even though the greenies are against it, ordinary people should be against it too. The huge cost of building Nuclear Power stations could cost over 5 billion. However luckily it was announced that the public would not have to foot this enormous bill like they had to foot Northern Rock. No, this time the public money would only get involved in an emergency. Well unluckily for us any emergency at a Nuclear Power plant is very likely to be very nasty and maybe far too late to stop a huge radioactive gas cloud descending on us all.

Nuclear Power in the short term may provide new jobs and boost our Nuclear Research economy, but in the long run it will destroy our countries natural landscape and end up as the investment holy grail, while green ventures such as offshore wind farms go into the bargain bin with solar panels.

People saying they don't like wind farms are essentially mad if they are agreeing to allow Nuclear Plants to be placed around the country. Nuclear plants are far dirtier and produce waste that must be transported around your neighbourhood, while the wind power argument is that they make a few decibels of sound.

This country is mad and I don't know why people are not rioting and protesting in the streets. Nuclear Power should be the final option and even then it should be discussed over and over again. Nuclear Power does actually create greenhouse gases in the form of water vapour, which is far more prevalent in the atmosphere than CO2. It just goes to show how crazy we all are by turning one dirty energy source into another one.

If we are going to go for Nuclear Power, then instead of investing in toxic Nuclear Fission we should going for clean and massive energy producing Nuclear Fusion. Fusion unlike Fission has no waste products and it's reactants come from water, which makes up 75% of the world's surface unlike Uranium where you have to dig a hole and stick a Geiger counter down it. Nuclear Fusion is still being researched and hypothesised. Instead of building these Fission plants more investment must go into Fusion, which is the holy grail energy source has it uses the equation E=mc2 to great effect.

Unfortunately, most of the countries and companies involved with Nuclear Fusion have pulled out meaning that the Fusion topic is being put in the dustbin. If we want to reinstate ourselves as leaders of the world we should actually become a leader in something instead of trailing behind other nations such as the BRIC and the USA.

Vote Fusion!
