Tonight, April 28, 2007 my brother and I attended The Ultimate Doo-wop Show - Hall of Fame Spectacular at the Stranahan Theater here in Toledo, Ohio. The Doo-Wop generation is before my brother and I's time. It was interesting during the performance when the announcer would say, "do you remember where you were when you heard this song on the radio?" Obviously not all the singers that made Doo-Wop what it is were in attendance. Many of the originals were able to attend though. The evening started with The Capris, three men in colorful bluish/purple suits singing "Great Balls of Fire" followed by "Daddy's Home", "A Hum Diddily Die Doo" and ending with "There's a Moon out Tonight."

The next group to perform were The Tymes. Five talented men in orange colorful suits singing "Somewhere my Love", "So in Love", and in addition the sang two more songs. They were the most entertaining with the most coordinated moves out of the groups in attendance.

My favorite was Shirley Alston, original lead of the Shirelles. I was able to enjoy "Soldier Boy", "Met Him on a Sunday", "Dedicated to the One I Love"," Mama Said", "Tonight's the Night", and "Baby, It's You".

The next group to perform were The Flamingos, featuring Terry Johnson. The group comprised of three men and one lady. There are known for the following songs: "Golden Tear Drops", "I'll be Home", "Lovers Never Say Goodbye", "Time Was."

Up next were The Tokens featuring Jay Siegel. My favorite songs they sang were "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and " Portrait of my Love". They sang " Tonight I Fell in Love" in addition. Whenever I hear the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" I remember one of favorite movies from grade school: Troop Beverly Hills with Shelley Long and Kellie Martin.

The evening concluded with The Star of the history-making PBS Specials-Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer - the "Iceman" -Jerry Butler. He was accompanied by two women and another gentleman. He is known for the following songs: "For Your Precious Love", "He will Break Your Heart", "Make it Easy on Yourself"," Moon River", "Dream Merchant", "Western Union Man", "Moody Woman". My favorite song that he sang at this event was "Moon River" because it reminds me of its presence in Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey Hepburn..

One of my favorite features of the evening was that so many groups were featured, this made it more enjoyable to experience different styles. The bands performed well in accordance with the singers. All of the groups welcomed the audience with open arms. Check out the following website for more details: http://www.canterburyproductions.com/upevents.htm.

The was not the first time the event graced Toledo, so maybe it will be back for you to enjoy in the future.
