The Ultimate List of the Top 5 Greatest NFL Coaches of All Time

These NFL Coaches Know What it Takes to Win Big Football Games

Darrin Atkins
If you want to win in the National Football League (NFL), you better have an excellent modern coach who knows how to get the most out of each player. Here are the top five greatest NFL coaches of all time who have found ways to win championships.

You need great coaches to succeed in football, coaches who can be creative yet conservative, who know when to take risks and when to play it safe. These coaches have shown success in the NFL at the highest level.

Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots

If you want success in football, you should study head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. He has led his team to the greatest success of any team in the last 10 years. For starters, consider his four Super Bowl appearances from 2001 to 2007 and his three Super Bowl victories. And consider that halfway through the 2009 season NFL season, the Patriots have only two losses, according to the NFL standings on ESPN.com.

Andy Reid of the Philadelphia Eagles

Andy Reid of the Philadelphia Eagles knows how to win and how to lead the Eagles to victories. From 2001 to 2008, the Eagles have appeared in five NFC championship games, including last year when they lost to the Arizona Cardinals. The Eagles nearly won Super Bowl XXXIX but were beaten by a single field goal by the New England Patriots.

Bill Walsh of the San Francisco 49ers

Bill Walsh is success personified and his years with the San Francisco 49ers were some of the most glorious NFL years ever recorded. Under his leadership, the 49ers won three Super Bowl championships. With Joe Montana as quarterback, the 49ers also recorded some of the biggest comeback victories in history.

Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers

There is a reason the Super Bowl winning trophy is called the Vince Lombardi trophy. Coach Lombardi won five NFL championships, which included victories in Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II. Also, he never had a losing season. If you love football, you better study Vince Lombardi before you do anything else.

John Madden of the Oakland Raiders

John Madden is known mostly for his role as a television announcer and his involvement in football video games. But long before that, he coached the Oakland Raiders to a win in Super Bowl XI. Consider his overall record of 112-39-7 and see how many coaches have ever come close to that kind of winning percentage.

    Your one stupid sob.

The Patriots made it to the playoff... for one game.

I agree that Chuck Noll must have been doing something right and is more deserving of a spot than Andy Reid, though Reid is certainly a good coach. Still, I'm happy NOT to see Landry and Parcells on the list. Probably Don Shula might come in as #6? I think that he
s the only one who metamorphosed into being a steakhouse!

Andy Reid, Bill Walsh and John Madden really! Percentage wins don't always give you a good stat for good coach's. Need to look at numbers of seasons etc. Good article and Coach Vince definitely belongs in this grouping.

Yeah, there are definitely some better coaches out there.

Um...Chuck Noll? (Double check time...play the JEOPARDY music.) Yep, you actually have ANDY REID on this list, but not Chuck Noll. Darrin, I should have stopped that guy who hit you in the head with that 2 by 4. I'm sorry.

I 100% agree with this list. Excellent!

How about the top 10? We loved Tom Landry!

Nice article, Darrin. But, I'm wondering how Joe Gibbs (Washington) and Don Shula (Miami) compare to these guys. Nice to see Andy Reid (Eagles) recognized. Great coach and great team!

Great list, but Tom Landry and Chuck Noll both belong on this list as well. Noll has more Super Bowl wins than any other head coach in NFL history. Tom Landry's NFL record remains one of the longest winning streaks in all of professional sports history. :)
