The Unconditional Love of a Dog

Sunshine Wilson
When I arrive home, my dog eagerly runs over to greet me. She's ecstatic that I am back. It doesn't matter if I have been gone for thirty minutes or five hours. Her reaction is always same; she's delighted to see me, no matter what. This is the unconditional love of a dog for her owner.

Her unconditional love for her owner will not end if I go from being rich to being poor, or changing my hair color from blonde to brunette. She will still love me if I wear designer clothes and carry a Chanel handbag or not. Or whether I drive a Lexus or an old clunker. She doesn't even care if I drive over the speed limit sometimes. She will still love me if I skip breakfast and eat dinner at midnight. She never asks me why I am late or where I've been and never gets mad at me for anything. She just wants to be with me.

My dog is a very special dog, an extremely smart individual with many rewarding qualities. She is no couch potato. She has energy and drive for all the things she does. Since she is owned by a dog trainer, she has been trained to do much more than the average dog.

Although my dog is an uncommon dog, her unconditional love for her owner and her desire to be with her owner is not uncommon in dogs.

Most dogs do have unconditional love for their owners and enjoy being with their owners. Dogs are social animals; most do not like being left alone. Dogs want to be treated as a member of the family, or pack as they see it.

Sometimes I hear of a dog who has spent his entire life, day in and day out, twenty-four hours a day, outside in a fenced yard. A dog who has only seen his owner when he is fed or when the owner is outside working in the yard. A dog who has been ignored for the majority of his life. This always breaks my heart. This is not the type of life that a dog enjoys. In my opinion, this is a life of merely existing, not living. A dog who is forced to exist in such a situation usually yearns for any type of attention, like any social animal would. And yes, even a dog such as this will probably has unconditional love for his owner.

I will close with a quote from an unknown author:

"My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am."

I've seen a variation on the quote you used: "Lord, please let me be half the person my dog thinks I am!" Very apt.

so true about dogs left in a yard only to be fed once a day-through life I've always given such dogs attention if noticed while passing by. some of them were so starved for attention it was a little difficult to move on.

All that is true, PLUS this: I learned this week while sitting in traffic, getting close to road rage, that it is nearly impossible to be mad if you say the word 'puppy' out loud. It just is.
