The Unfinished Poem

National Poetry Month Daily Challenge: The Final Poem

The Unfinished Poem
A poem is never finished, only abandoned.
~Paul Valéry

Where do the unfinished poems go? Do they
wander aimlessly down darkened streets and plea
with passersby for pocketed changes? Do they smell
of tears and defeat and sleep in dark alleys with stray
cats who mark them as their own? Do they
dream of you and me and call us home
to their open, longing, aching arms? Yes, to all, yes.

"Do they smell of tears..." Don't you love when a line like that comes to you? My saying more would only detract, so I'm going now...

Most 'unfinished' poems are, indeed, finished. It is the thinking of the port that continues on and makes it seem so... I think!
